In the 12th meeting between two veterans of the sport, and seven years after their last one, 19th seed Dimitrov registered only his fourth win over the Scot.
Murray wilted inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the court upon which he won his first grand slam title in 2012, as he slipped to a 6-3 6-4 6-1 defeat.
Elsewhere, there are five other Brits in second-round singles action, with Katie Boulter and Jack Draper reaching the third round after early-match wins against Yafan Wang and 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz respectively, while Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans are all playing later in the day in New York. Jodie Burrage lost in straight-sets to world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

A game with SIX deuces - lasting 16 minutes - and it’s Murray who prevails!
Murray with a chance to break straight back at 30-40 - but he misses a pretty routine backhand pass crosscourt!
A lengthy point at deuce was won by Murray for another break point, but Dimitrov holds firm on his forehand and overheads in the sun!
Dimitrov struggles to close it out, though, going long on his forehand and then double-faulting on two games points of his own, before a wide forehand brings back another deuce.
A mesmeric point - again! - at deuce with both men at the net is won by Dimitrov with a stretching backhand volley, before Murray forces an error.
But then one of the points of the tournament! Murray has to react to a net cord and plays a terrific forehand drop shot on the run, ending up on Dimitrov’s baseline! The pair touch rackets!

Dimitrov holds to 15 to start this one off, with his typically huge forehand backing up some first serves and Murray netting on the backhand side to give away the game.
A pretty big shadow emerging with basically half the court covered in shade - Murray immediately implying that he’s having trouble picking up Dimitrov’s serve in that game.
