Murray constructs another excellent rally from the back of the court to bring out a Berrettini mistake and move to 30-0, at which point the 13th seed takes a moment to swap rackets – he appears to have damaged the frame on a backhand slice. His first point with the new weapon is swept away with a lovely crosscourt winner, and Murray then screams into the sky after botching a forehand way long. Murray’s serve again comes under pressure at the sunny end of the court, but he does excellently to push Berrettini around the court to extract an error near the net, and then wins a thriller of a rally featuring lobs and drop shots aplenty to go 3-2 up.

A quick hold for Berrettini puts the pressure back on Murray’s serve, and the Scot will have to deal with the sun in his eyes once more – both of the breaks he has given away have come at that end.

Murray delivers his first ace of the match – an away-swinger down the T – to draw level at 15-all. He follows it with two dominant rallies which draw mistakes from his opponent, and a weak drop-shot into the net gifts Murray the hold.

A wonderful backhand return by Murray lands at an advancing Berrettini’s feet, and the big Italian can’t stoop to pick it up cleanly – that’s 15-15. They exchange a couple of errors for 30-all, as Murray shouts “come on!” at the back wall several times. He pulls off a brilliant lob to earn a break point, and he constructs an excellent rally off Berrettini’s second serve to force a backhand error into the net. Fantastic response by Murray to break back.

Murray gets himself to 30-15 before dumping a half-court forehand into the net. Looking up into the sun, he produces a second double fault of the match to offer up another break point. The Italian clinches the break with a smash at the net and Murray is in deep trouble now, a set and a break down.

A 136mph ace kicks off the game, and Berrettini follows it with another to go up 30-love. Murray chips a backhand long and Berrettini whips home a forehand winner to tie up the set.

Murray takes charge of the game with the first three points, but he’s having to do it the hard way as his first serve seems to have deserted him. He holds to love, and now needs to break back or the first set will be Berrettini’s.
