Two of snooker’s biggest met in the first round of the UK Championship as Judd Trump overcame Neil Robertson 6-3 in their mouthwatering clash in York.

The pair have won 53 ranking titles between them during their trophy-laden careers to date and Trump is currently world No 1 after winning a remarkable seven tournaments in the past 15 months.

The one minor blip on the 35-year-old Englishman’s incredible CV is the fact he ‘only’ has four victories at snooker’s triple crown events (the World Championship, UK Championship and Masters) and he is trying to win this tournament at the Barbican Centre for just the second time, after his 2011 success.

He trailed three-time UK champion Robertson 3-1 but then upped his levels and won five frames on the spin to triumph 6-3 and set up a last-16 clash with John Higgins, who overcame He Guoqiang 6-0 on the oher table.

Judd Trump 0-2 Neil Robertson

Trump ends a safety stalemate by potting a thin cut with the rest, and he adds the blue, and another red, to leave himself within a couple of balls of winning the frame...

Trump and Robertson exchange some pretty messy snooker, passing control of the table between one another. Trump currently leads this frame 37-3, but it’s Robertson at the table, trying to plot his way out of a tricky situation with a cluster of three reds closely surrounding the black.

He’s been pondering this for nearly a minute...

John Higgins 4-0 He Guoqiang

While Trump builds a steady break, John Higgins is dominating He Guoqiang on table one. He is struggling, with only nine balls potted and a high break of 14, and he will need to regroup in the mid-session interval.

Judd Trump 0-2 Neil Robertson

Trump makes an immediate statement of intent at the start of the third frame, taking on a loose red from close to the baulk cushion and slamming it into the heart of the left corner pocket. A kiss on the yellow leaves him on the brown, and this is a decent early chance to score.

FRAME ROBERTSON! Judd Trump 0-2 Neil Robertson

Trump leaves a thin but pottable cut to the left middle and Robertson accepts the invitation, knocking home brown and blue to clinch the second frame.

What a crucial moment this could turn out to be... Robertson snicks the green in an attempt to send the cue ball safe, but inadvertently doubles it into the yellow pocket! A total fluke, and the Australian puffs out his cheeks and raises an apologetic hand. Trump sits and stares blankly back at him.

The frame isn’t over, though, as Robertson isn’t on the brown and will need to play safe.

Judd Trump 0-1 Neil Robertson

Trump pots the yellow to trail by six, but the green is tucked safe against the side cushion and a safety battle ensues. The rest of the balls are spread quite nicely, so whoever pots the green will have a good chance of winning this frame.

Judd Trump 0-1 Neil Robertson

“Haha, no chance,” remarks Robertson, with the crowd laughing too after the Australian poses for a massé shot with both men on the yellow as this tense frame meanders to a conclusion.

Delicate shots played by both men, back and forth, Robertson, ahead by eight, runs the white up to the top cushion.

Drama here, but not what you’d expect, a couple of basic snookers and both players miss, first Robertson’s two misses and now Trump, tucked in behind the black. He plays off the baulk cushion, but too much side!

Third attempt, it’s magic, dead weight and the white rests close to the red on the side cushion. Trump left with an opportunity after a poor shot from Robertson leaves a long ball on and he drains it, coming back up the table to the black, but... What a miss from Trump! A scrappy frame with both players making a litany of errors.

Play has resumed and Robertson at the table, but not left with much.

A short break of eight, he glances the black in a bid to play safe, Trump works the white back to the middle of the table and secures the snooker.

Up steps Robertson, he comes off the side cushion but misses the red, foul and a miss... The Aussie takes another go, same shot, same outcome!

The frame is 31 minutes, without the disruption, a tense moment in this match... Trump now down 45-44 only, and he returns to the table after Robertson makes contact with the red.
