Scotland secured a statement victory against Australia to mark a perfect end to their Autumn Nations Series campaign.

Second-half tries from Duhan van der Merwe, Josh Bayliss and Finn Russell powered the hosts away, with Scotland largely controlling affairs after a fast Wallabies start. With their outside backs impressing and forwards standing up well to the visitors’ physicality, it was a complete performance from Gregor Townsend’s side as they secured a third win of November after previous successes against Fiji and Portugal.

Defeat at Murrayfield ended Australia’s hopes of emulating the achievement of the 1984 side, who swept the four home nations on a grand slam tour. Joe Schmidt’s team showed some of their inexperience, unable to find a route into the game as Scotland denied them opportunities in the broken field to secure a strong home victory.

Scotland 17-6 Australia, 54 minutes

Can Australia find life? They haven’t really had a grip on this game since the first 15 minutes. A breakdown penalty allows them to gain some territory.

Jamie Ritchie’s pilfering paws get to the ball in the air. It will be a Wallabies scrum - and a new front row in Billy Pollard, Isaac Kailea and Zane Nonggorr are on to anchor it.

TRY! SCOTLAND 17-6 Australia (Duhan van der Merwe, 52 minutes)

And the pressure finally tells! Sharp handling from Finn Russell and, particularly, Blair Kinghorn create enough room for Duhan van der Merwe to hurry home in the left corner.

A fine touchline conversion from Russell adds to the lead. Lovely stuff from Scotland, and a second try they have richly deserved.

Scotland 10-6 Australia, 50 minutes

Here come the hosts again, Duhan van der Merwe opening up his legs and making 20 metres before a recovering Carlo Tizzano chops him down. On the opposite wing, Darcy Graham jinks to within five metres.

Play on! Scotland 10-6 Australia, 50 minutes

A long review from referee Chris Busby and his team ends with no sanction! They are happy with Wright’s actions - which is fair enough, really, with no change in line to block White with the scrum half moving at speed.

Australia will clear from a goalline drop out.

Scotland 10-6 Australia, 49 minutes

Noah Lolesio nearly wriggles free of the Scottish defence, but the hosts recover well, Zander Fagerson coming away with the ball. Off Scotland go from inside their own 22, Blair Kinghorn offloading nicely to Ben White.

Crunch! White chips over the top of final defender Tom Wright and then charges into the full-back. How will the Wallabies view this? Wright is entitled to stand his ground but he knew what he was doing...

Scotland 10-6 Australia, 48 minutes

Scotland are then annoyed as Australia are awarded a scrum penalty despite Pierre Schoeman appearing to gain a bit of dominance. His angle was, perhaps, questionable, while the loosehead may also have slipped his bind.

Scotland 10-6 Australia, 47 minutes

Nearly! After a lovely pull-back from Sione Tuipulotu, Darcy Graham just about gets a pass away at the line that seems set to free Blair Kinghorn - but the full-back can’t quite reel it in with his fingertips!

PENALTY! Scotland 10-6 AUSTRALIA (Noah Lolesio, 46 minutes)

And the Wallabies fly half obliges.

Scotland 10-3 Australia, 45 minutes

That margin will be immediately narrowed. Carlo Tizzano jackals well to win a penalty, that is well within Noah Lolesio’s range...

PENALTY! SCOTLAND 10-3 Australia (Finn Russell, 44 minutes)

And Finn Russell extends Scotland’s advantage.
