South Africa’s backs Makazole Mapimpi and Lukhanyo Am scored second half tries as the Springboks beat the British & Irish Lions 27-9 to win Saturday’s second test at the Cape Town Stadium and level the series.

Handre Pollard added five penalties and a conversion for a 17-point contribution while the Lions points all came off the boot of Dan Biggar in a niggly and ill-tempered contest that again was one for the purists rather than the enthusiast.

The result sets up a decider next Saturday after the Lions had won an attritional first test 22-17.

The Lions were 9-6 up at halftime but the Springboks bounced back with a dominant second half performance that turned the tide of the game.

“Momentum swings both ways,” Robbie Henshaw said on Sky Sports. “South Africa came out in the second half and got a bit of an edge on us in an arm-wrestle game. But a positive is that in the final Test next week, it is all to play for, which makes it exciting.

“We have to pick ourselves up next week and come back stronger. It is all to play for next week. It is finals rugby and at the top level. Everyone is going to be up for it, so it is going to be an exciting week.”

South Africa 6-9 Lions

Six penalties conceded by the Lions; nine by the Springboks. It has been a properly messy half in Cape Town, a yellow card apiece and plenty for Ben O’Keefe and his officiating team to deal with. The referee has managed a tough situation reasonably well. Both yellow cards were probably just about the right call, but the breakdown has been a little all over the place - like no man’s land, but with more barbed wire.

South Africa 6-9 Lions

65 minutes since we kicked off and we have only just arrived at the half-time whistle. It has been frantic and furious in Cape Town, though not particularly fast.

Little in the way of attacking fluency shown by either side, with each preferring to battle in the air so far, but it remains nicely poised.

South Africa 6-9 Lions, 40 minutes

The hooter blares as we finally finds some stability, but the South Africans fancy one more charge into the red sea. They are swept back by the swift-approaching tide and Faf de Klerk says “enough of this”, sending everyone down the tunnel with a nudge over the touchline.

Crikey, even the scrum is messier than Jackson Pollock’s easel. Just a reset, says Ben O’Keeffe, as the props fold in on one another.

Both teams are struggling to find momentum in a game that has become very scrappy. The best option for both at the moment is to send the ball skywards, as they are doing with increasing regularity. Duhan van der Merwe appears to unleash some sort of Mortal Kombat flying punch on the ball as he doesn’t quite get his grasp right while in good position to claim the lastest hoist. Knock-on, South Africa scrum.

PENALTY! South Africa 6-9 LIONS (Dan Biggar penalty, 37 minutes)

Popped over with little fuss from close range by Dan Biggar. The Lions lead, again, with both sides restored to 15.

The on-field decision is no try - Ben O’Keeffe thinks Henshaw has knocked on. Siya Kolisi has done so, so well, managing to get his arm beneath the ball as the centre tumbles over the line. Henshaw thinks he has scored, but Kolisi has just about managed to keep the ball from the line and then dislodge it.

And there’s nothing in the Faf de Klerk/Conor Murray incident, either. A brief check with the TMO now, but O’Keeffe says that Marius Jonker has already looked at it.

There will be a penalty to the Lions for a no-arms tackle by Bongi Mbonambi.

Try? Yellow card? Red card? Everything is happening!

It’s chaos in Cape Town as Faf de Klerk appears to thump Conor Murray high in the tackle, before a clever chip is gathered by Robbie Henshaw, who might have scored, or might have knocked on. Marius Jonker has plenty to look at...

Stolen! Outstanding from Franco Mostert, getting up just in time to get a finger or two to Luke Cowan-Dickie’s throw before the waiting hands of Courtney Lawes can gather.

Eben Etzebeth gathers the tumbling ball but is driven back over his own line. Duhan van der Merwe is back on as the Lions set a five-metre scrum.
