British and Irish Lions in numbers

South Africa’s backs Makazole Mapimpi and Lukhanyo Am scored second half tries as the Springboks beat the British & Irish Lions 27-9 to win Saturday’s second test at the Cape Town Stadium and level the series.

Handre Pollard added five penalties and a conversion for a 17-point contribution while the Lions points all came off the boot of Dan Biggar in a niggly and ill-tempered contest that again was one for the purists rather than the enthusiast.

The result sets up a decider next Saturday after the Lions had won an attritional first test 22-17.

The Lions were 9-6 up at halftime but the Springboks bounced back with a dominant second half performance that turned the tide of the game.

“Momentum swings both ways,” Robbie Henshaw said on Sky Sports. “South Africa came out in the second half and got a bit of an edge on us in an arm-wrestle game. But a positive is that in the final Test next week, it is all to play for, which makes it exciting.

“We have to pick ourselves up next week and come back stronger. It is all to play for next week. It is finals rugby and at the top level. Everyone is going to be up for it, so it is going to be an exciting week.”

South Africa 0-0 Lions, 2 minutes

Handbags! A spiky start as South Africa’s maul initially gets moving well, but the Lions take it down. It will be a South Africa scrum as the lead carrier broke away and then was brought to floor, and an unplayable ball at a ruck will go the way of the team moving forward in possession.

And then they all join in! The forwards exchange shirt grabs, Eben Etzebeth and Alun Wyn Jones nose-to-nose as the backs shout their encouragement and the scrum-halves yap along - it’s a very placid fracas in the end, but does allow Ben O’Keeffe the opportunity to lay down the law to both captains. Jones and Siya Kolisi nod along.

Now then - a pause, for some reason. O’Keeffe appears to be gazing vaguely towards a screen, while Conor Murray takes on some water.

Nothing on the TV feed. After a brief delay, time for the South Africa lineout about 12 metres from the Lions’ line.

An early win for the Lions as Anthony Watson taps back Conor Murray’s first box kick, but Maro Itoje can’t cling on as it collides with his chest.

The first intervention from Ben O’Keeffe - a penalty against Mako Vunipola for failing to move away from a ruck. South Africa enter the Lions 22 for the first time.

Fist bumps for the officials - Ben O’Keeffe has a final word for his assistants Mathieu Raynal and Nic Berry, and off to the middle he strides. South Africa will kick off...

Lions vs South Africa: Kick-off nears

Belinda Davis is on South African anthem duties this week, in a white dress with shimmering beads of the South African flag across the shoulders.

The South African players join as one, arms around shoulders along the line.

Rassie Erasmus sings along, mask around his chin, ready to tote the water again. Jasper Wiese mean-mugs the camera with his menacing moustache - I’m not sure he has another facial expression.

Lions vs South Africa: 50 for Steven Kitshoff

Leading the Springboks out this evening is Steven Kitshoff, a lone figure trotting out of the artificial green smoke that greets the South African players in the final metres of the tunnel. A broad, proud smile from Kitshoff, who looks a little unsure of what to do with himself once he gets out there, alone.

He won’t have to wait too long - Siya Kolisi breaks into a brisk jog, Frans Malherbe charging along behind him, and hearty hand slaps and hugs show the Springboks are ready.

A ring of empty seats may not be quite the audience desired for an occasion like this, but Cape Town Stadium is a bit of a stunner, even uninhabited.

Out first into the arena - Alun Wyn Jones and his British and Irish Lions. Like the animal namesake, it’s a great, teeth-displaying yawn from Jones as he stretches his jaw out, ready to bark his orders as the flamethrowers fly.

Off-the-field matters have taken centre stage rather than the first Test victory for the Lions
