It will be a day to remember for Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones as the lock makes his 149th international appearance to break Richie McCaw’s record of Test appearances, with this being his 140th outing for his country on top of his nine Lions appearances. Wales fans will also look to debutant flanker Shane Lewis-Hughes, having been talked up by the skipper himself as one to watch for the future.
Scotland will be a significantly more dangerous proposition today though with the enigmatic Finn Russell back at fly-half after resolving his differences with head coach Gregor Townsend, with the Scots out to claim a rare away victory that could secure them a top-three finish in the Championship. 60 mins: Italy 5-24 England
England clear their lines and the replacements are ready to flood on, though they’ll be held until the next stoppage. The lineout is a bit of a mess, but Curry is judged to be off his feet as he pinches the ball and Italy have the penalty.
59 mins: Italy 5-24 England
England get straight onto the ball in the maul and secure the turnover, and match Italy on the celebration front. Ellis Genge is on for Mako Vunipola, with his task to inject some real power into the game.
58 mins: Italy 5-24 England
England and Italy trade kicks, before May shapes up to launch one of his own. He changes his mind and goes it alone, and is immediately stopped by Zilocchi that results in an Italian penalty for holding on, which sees the home side erupt in celebration. Italy kick into the 22.
55 ins: Italy 5-24 England
England win another penalty and you’d imagine this one is going to the corner, but the TMO wants to check a tackle from Ben Earl and it’s judged to be a no-arm hit that sees the penalty overturned.
54 mins: Italy 5-24 England
Replacements for England as Ollie Thorley is coming on for his debut, replacing Anthony Watson on the wing.
52 mins: Italy 5-24 England
Well that was all rather confusing! England set up the maul and get a huge shove on as Farrell, Youngs and Joseph all join in, and once the bodies move Jamie George is at the base smiling with the ball ground … only the try isn’t given! Pascal Gauzere tells the hooker he’s short of the line, much to England’s bemusement, and once Gauzere consults his assistants he realises he’s looking at the sponsorship line on the turf and has called it wrong! Try given! Farrell converts and England have a healthy lead now.
50 mins: Italy 5-17 England
England get probably their best passage of phases together, though Italy defend it rather impressively, only for replacement prop Ferrari to go straight in at the side and undo all the strong work. It gives Farrell the chance to send it to the corner as Italy are restored to full numbers.
48 mins: Italy 5-17 England
Farrell kicks back-to-back after England manage to work one of their own kicks into Itoje hands. The second one is just gathered by Garbisi before May can get to it, and Italy successfully exit their 22 despite intense pressure from the England defence.
47 mins: Italy 5-17 England
Italian full-back Minozzi is having to leave the field after catching a nasty blow to the head, and replays show it’s a head-to-head clash with May that’s done the damage. His nose is all over the place, and that looks pretty broken to me, as he leaves the field with blood pouring from it. Guglielmo Palazzani is on in his place.
