Jim Mallinder previews England vs Barbarians

England fell to a third successive defeat as the Barbarians overcame a first-half red card shown to Will Skelton to win 52-21 at Twickenham, their biggest victory in the fixture.

Skelton became the first player sent off in Barbarians history when his shoulder to the head of Patrick Schickerling ended the Exeter prop’s afternoon because of a failed head injury assessment.

Forced to play 43 minutes with only 14 men, Fabien Galthie’s men showed their class by continuing to run in tries with Damian Penaud crossing twice and Baptiste Couilloud, Louis Carbonel, Max Spring and Antoine Hastoy also on the scoresheet. Even the arrival of Danny Care early in the third quarter for his first international appearance in nearly four years failed to inspire disjointed England, who fired only in sporadic bursts.

Eddie Jones had picked the usual mix of youth and experience for the annual uncapped international, but even allowing for the experimental line-up it was a disappointing outing ahead of next month’s three-Test series against Australia. To rub salt into England’s wounds, their former lock George Kruis kicked three conversions including an outrageous backheel to head into retirement with a smile on his face.

Relive all the action from Twickenham below

England 21-38 Barbarians - 72 min

Powerful carries by England move them within metres of the line. Quick-tap penalty and then Jack Nowell drives to just millimetres away.

Jonny Hill stretches out over the line but he knocks on trying to ground it and Baa Baas have a goal-line dropout!

England 21-38 Barbarians - 70 min

England claim the kick-off and Marcus Smith produces a glorious nudge into the corner that forces Baa Baas into a lineout five metres from their own line.

Well executed by the visitors and they kick clear but a good platform for England who win the penalty and kick to the corner themselves

TRY! England 21-38 Barbarians - 66 min

Barbarians win a penalty around halfway and make ground into the 22 with the kick.

They go through the phases and Nolann Le Garrec produces a glorious dinked chip over the defence, which Louis Carbonel hares after catches in the in-goal area and touches down.

A very traditionally Barbarians try. Simple conversion added and the 14-man Baa Baas are purring here.

MISSED CONVERSION! England 21-31 Barbarians - 61 min

Another conversion attempt from Smith goes wide. He’s been pretty inaccurate today.

TRY! England 21-31 Barbarians - 60 min

A hard carry from Tom Curry takes England into Barbarians territory and Jonny May’s dart then sees them work their way to within inches of the line.

Baa Baas hold firm for a couple of phases, a patented Danny Care snipe is also stopped but Marcus Smith then gets fed the ball, steps outside his man and dives over. Nicely worked - good crisp, accurate attack.

MISSED CONVERSION! England 16-31 Barbarians - 55 min

Touchline conversion and it’s Hastoy who steps up rather than George Kruis this time... Maybe Kruis should have taken it! The attempt misses and it’s 31-16

TRY! England 16-31 Barbarians - 54 min

You wouldn’t know Barbarians were at a man disadvantage here...

Switching the point of play and making good ground, eventually Hastoy floats a pass out to Penaud on the right wing who has a lot of work to do but finishes brilliantly and acrobatically in the corner. Tommy Freeman tries to get him into touch but the France winger does brilliantly and the TMO determines the try will stand

England 16-26 Barbarians

A slew of Barbarians changes including exciting young scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec coming on. If you haven’t seen him before, he’s dynamite for Racing 92 and will be Antoine Dupont’s deputy/rival for many years to come you’d think. If Dupont ever loses form, Le Garrec would be nipping right at his heels, I’d suggest.

MISSED CONVERSION! England 16-26 Barbarians - 51 min

Marcus Smith has played well today but his kicking has been errant. The conversion from near the right touchline misses and the deficit is still ten points.

TRY! England 16-26 Barbarians - 50 min

Better from England, good hands with neat inside passes helping them make ground and a great Marcus Smith show and go.

Into the 22 and Smith directing traffic. Consistently quick ball from Danny Care, who also gets clobbered drawing in his man at one point, but he feeds Mark Atkinson, who flicks to Smith and a floated pass to Jonny May on the right wing allows the prolific finisher to step inside the defender and slide over.

Great stuff and dare I suggest Care playing 9 instead of Randall helped considerably there...
