Revellers enjoy 176th Grand National at Aintree

I Am Maximus won the 2024 Grand National at Aintree in a topsy-turvy race where a winner couldn’t be called until the final straight. The 2023 champion Corach Rambler unseated jockey Derek Fox at the first fence which opened up the field for the rest of the riders.

Glengouly set the early pace fighting for the front with Foxy Jacks as the experienced jockeys looked to position themselves in the middle of the pack. Kitty’s Light moved up to third with Latenightpass and Galia Des Liteaux making charges towards the front of the field.

Rachael Blackmore’s Minella Indo and Jack Kennedy’s Delta Work - both 28/1- battled for the lead as Paul Townend and I Am Maximus kicked on.

Blackmore leapt the last slightly ahead but didn’t have the staying power, as I Am Maximus swept past and stormed to the finish line to win with ease – handing trainer Willie Mullins his second Grand National victory after Hedgehunter in 2005.

4pm - Grand National result

Winning trainer Willie Mullins to ITV: “Paul Townend was super on him, the horse wasn’t giving him a lot of help. We saw last year in the Irish Grand National we had supreme confidence in the horse that he had a bit in the tank. He was biding his time and he delivered.

“I didn’t say anything until the last fence but then I let go. I love it, I’m buzzing, it’s huge. As far as I know all of our team are back in good order so I’m very happy with that.”

Who won the Grand National 2024?

Willie Mullins won the Grand National for the second time as the joint-favourite I Am Maximus romped away down the home straight to take glory at Aintree.

The legendary trainer has dominated the Cheltenham Festival but Hedgehunter in 2005 was his only previous Grand National winner until Paul Townend expertly steered the 7/1 shot to glory, pulling away after clearing the final fence.

Delta Work finished second with Minella Indo in third, Galvin fourth and Kitty’s Light rounding out the top five.

Kitty’s Light was fifth - what a wonderful story that has been, and will bring in some each-way money for many I’m sure.

A win for Paul Townend and JP McManus! I Am Maximus, well backed throughout the day, kicked on superbly after the final jump and reined in Minella Indo.

Kitty’s Light didn’t have the legs but I Am Maximus did. He improved down the final straight and ended up winning beautifully in the end.
