Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Will you back the favourite, follow the form or just stick a pin in the list of runners and hope for the best?

It's a very hot day, in case you hasn't noticed.

Which means that there's going to be a break with tradition after this year's National.

Meanwhile, it's almost time for the national anthem...

The runners are in the parade ring. We're only moments away!

Vithushan Ehantharajah8 April 2017 17:12

QUICK: Everybody go out and stick a quid on every single runner!

Vithushan Ehantharajah8 April 2017 17:13

Nobody yet knows who's going to start as favourite here, in a few minutes time.

Blacklion and Definitely Red are both 10/1 at the moment.

Vithushan Ehantharajah8 April 2017 17:18

Bad news for anybody who backed Lord Windemere.

He's looking very ill at ease and his handles are having to coax him to the start-line. It's not looking good.

Vithushan Ehantharajah8 April 2017 17:18

Here we go!

...No!

There's a false start. The flags are waved and all the horses have to trot back to the start-line. Drama already!

Vithushan Ehantharajah8 April 2017 17:20

Top work, Craig.
