From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Great Britain women begin their campaign at the Tokyo Olympics against Chile with the Games underway in both the football and softball before Friday’s opening ceremony.

The women’s football competition gets under way with Great Britain taking on Chile in Sapporo at 8.30am BST (4.30pm in Japan). Kicking off in Tokyo at 9.30am BST will be the highly anticipated meeting between Sweden, who won silver in Rio losing to Germany in the final, and the reigning world champions USA.

The Games remains on course although the head of the organising committee Toshiro Muto refused to completely rule out a last-minute cancellation amid ongoing concern surrounding Covid-19. “At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”

Healthy Oh recovered from Covid and ready for Tokyo, says coach

South Korea’s Olympic coach Kim Hyoung-ryul sought to remove any doubt over the fitness of top ranked Oh Sang-uk, claiming the sabre fencer has recovered from a bout of COVID-19 that sidelined him in March.

Kim confirmed the right-hander is back to peak fitness as he prepares to lead the team on an assault on the podium places at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“He’s already had his treatment, and he’s fully healthy,” the coach told Yonhap news agency. “He’s doing great now.”

Oh will compete in the individual sabre, which takes place on Saturday, before joining Gu Bon-gil, Kim Jung-hwan and Kim Jun-ho next Wednesday in the team event.

Oh, currently the world’s No. 1 ranked sabre fencer, won the world indivudal and team titles in Budapest in 2019 while Gu and Kim Jung-hwan were members of the Olympic gold medal-winning South Korean team in 2012.

With that pedigree, the Koreans are among the favourites for the gold medal in Tokyo and coach Kim is confident his team have done the groundwork necessary to be successful.

“We came here all prepared,” he said.

“For the final few days before the competition, it will come down to repeating what we’ve been practicing.”

Half-time: Great Britain 1-0 Chile

Elsewhere in the women’s football competition, Brazil are leading China 2-0 while the USA have just kicked off their bid to win the gold medal in Tokyo. They’re up against Sweden and will be out for revenge after the Swedes dumped them out of the 2016 Olympics at the quarter-final stage five years ago.

In the Brazil match, legend Marta scored the opening goal and has now scored in her fifth Olympic Games - a record. The 35-year-old has also scored in five straight World Cups, a legend of the game.
