Megan Rapinoe silences her critics by scoring twice as USA wins bronze

Brazil retained their Olympic football title with substitute Malcom scoring an extra-time winner in a 2-1 victory over Spain in Saturday’s men’s gold medal game.

After the game ended 1-1 following normal time, Malcom raced onto a diagonal ball from Antony and got the better of the hesitant Jesus Vallejo before driving the winner into the far corner to clinch gold for Brazil after their Rio 2016 triumph.

Brazil forward Richarlison had missed a 39th-minute penalty before the South Americans grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time when a deep Claudinho cross was hooked back across the area by Dani Alves and Cunha brought the ball down to slot home.

Spain threatened little but got on level terms in the 61st minute when substitute Carlos Soler broke down the right and whipped a cross to the back post where Mikel Oyarzabal connected with a sweet left-foot volley that whistled past Santos.

The Spaniards hit the woodwork twice in the final five minutes of normal time before Malcom grabbed the glory for Brazil in the second period of extra time.

Relive the action below.

SAVE! Huge save from Simon to deny Richarlison!

Brazil 1 - 0 Spain

54 mins: Brazil should be two goals up! Dani Alves flicks the ball over the top and picks out Matheus Cunha on the inside right. He takes the ball into the box before slotting it to Richarlison. Richarlison shifts the ball to the left and sits Oscar Gil down. He shoots but hits Unai Simon who’s made himself as large as possible. The deflection bounces up off the goalkeeper, hits the underside of the crossbar and bounces away from goal allowing Spain to clear the danger.

Brazil 1 - 0 Spain

51 mins: Douglas Luiz feeds a ball in behind the Spanish high line as Antony sprints forward on the right. He collects the ball and drives into the box as Cucurella and Garcia close him down. He manages to get a shot away but Simon palms it wide of the near post as the flag goes up for offside against Antony.

CHANCE! Spain come close to an equaliser!

48 mins: Both substitutes get into the action as Soler starts the move with a pass into Pedri. He drives through the midfield before slotting to ball out to Bryan Gil on the left side. Gil delivers a low pass into Oyarzabal who flicks the ball towards goal only for Soler to block his teammate’s effort as he makes a run towards the near post.

Second half: Brazil 1 - 0 Spain

Kick off: Spain have made a double change at the break. Bryan Gil and Carlos Soler are both on replacing Mikel Moreno and Marco Asensio. Spain get the final back underway. They trail by one goal to nil, can they find a way back into this match?

Half-time: Brazil 1 - 0 Spain

45+3 mins: So it’s the reigning Olympic champions Brazil who take a one-goal lead into the break. They’ve been the better side over the first 45 minutes and should have gone in front from the penalty spot only for Richarlison to hoof the ball over the crossbar. Spain had a good chance to take the lead but Diego Carlos cleared the chance off the line before Matheus Cunha stepped up on the stroke of half-time to beat Unai Simon and put Brazil in the driving seat.

GOAL! Brazil 1 - 0 Spain (Cunha, 45+2’)⚽️

45+2 mins: Brazil have the lead! Right on the stroke of half-time Matheus Cunha puts Brazil ahead. Claudinho fizzes a cross into the box from the left side. Dani Alves pops into the box to keep the ball from going out of play and he knocks it into the air. Cunha brings the ball down, checks to his right and fires it low into the bottom corner. Lovely finish.

Brazil 0 - 0 Spain

45 mins: There’s going to be two minutes of added time to end the first half.

Michael Jones7 August 2021 13:15

Brazil 0 - 0 Spain

40 mins: Still nothing to separate the teams. Will Richarlison end up ruing that chance. Spain win a free kick that Asensio knocks into the box from the right. Oyarzabal is his target but the ball curls away from the Spanish forward. It bounces towards the back post where Zubimendi appears but isn’t able to turn the ball towards goal.

MISSED! Richarlison belts it over the bar

38 mins: It’s a reprieve for Spain as Richarlison misses from the spot. He stuttered up to the ball, takes a pause and then smokes the penalty way over the crossbar!

PENALTY to Brazil

37 mins: Referee Chris Beath is called over to the monitor to take a look at the incident. He judges Unai Simon to have fouled Matheus Cunha and points to the spot.

Brazil have the chance to take the lead.
