Megan Rapinoe silences her critics by scoring twice as USA wins bronze

Brazil retained their Olympic football title with substitute Malcom scoring an extra-time winner in a 2-1 victory over Spain in Saturday’s men’s gold medal game.

After the game ended 1-1 following normal time, Malcom raced onto a diagonal ball from Antony and got the better of the hesitant Jesus Vallejo before driving the winner into the far corner to clinch gold for Brazil after their Rio 2016 triumph.

Brazil forward Richarlison had missed a 39th-minute penalty before the South Americans grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time when a deep Claudinho cross was hooked back across the area by Dani Alves and Cunha brought the ball down to slot home.

Spain threatened little but got on level terms in the 61st minute when substitute Carlos Soler broke down the right and whipped a cross to the back post where Mikel Oyarzabal connected with a sweet left-foot volley that whistled past Santos.

The Spaniards hit the woodwork twice in the final five minutes of normal time before Malcom grabbed the glory for Brazil in the second period of extra time.

Relive the action below.

ET half-time: Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

105+1 mins: Still all square as we come to the break in extra time. I said before the game this one could go to penalties and we’re just 15 minutes away from that outcome. Brazil still have a bunch of substitutes they can turn to if needed. Malcom has been electric for them since coming on.

Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

105 mins: Rafa Mir is on for Mikel Oyarzabal for Spain as the ball comes over the top towards Bryan Gil. He brings the ball down and comes up against Dani Alves. There’s no way past the experienced Brazilian defender but Gil wins a corner for Spain.

Brazil deal with the set piece and sends Malcom free on the counter. Gil chases him down and yanks him to ground to stop the attack. It’s a cynically tackle and Gil is shown a yellow card.

Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

102 mins: Brazil have been the dominant team in extra time. It’s amazing how this game has ebbed and flowed, Spain digging deep to stay in the contest.

Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

99 mins: Malcom flicks the ball into the box and Pau Torres fails to clear the danger. The ball drops to Richarlison who can’t quite bring it under control which allows Torres to tap the ball away from him as he takes the shot. Both players go to ground and the ball goes wide of goal.

96 mins: Malcom makes a run into the left side of the box. He gets around Garcia and squeezes off a shot. Garcia does well to recover and pokes the ball wide of the near post but gives away a corner.

Extra time: Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

Kick off: Spain kick off extra time. There’s 30 minutes to play. A goal either way could be enough to secure the gold medal. If not we’ll be headin to penalties.

Full-time: Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

90+3 mins: Into extra time we go. The men’s football gold medal match needs another 30 minutes to decide the winner. Spain rallied well in the second half to find an equaliser but couldn’t push on for a winning goal. They struck the crossbar twice but things remain level after the 90 minutes.

Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

90 mins: Three minutes of added time to play. Spain work a short corner to Soler who whips a cross into the box. Pau Torres meets the pass and heads it over the bar.

Brazil 1 - 1 Spain

88 mins: Oh my! Spain come within inches of a goal medal! Carlos Soler brings the ball inside from the right and leaves the ball for Bryan Gil. He shifts the ball onto his left foot and smacks a shot at goal from outside the box. He drills it at goal, beats Santos for pace and hits the crossbar again!
