Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow the latest scores from The Open live as the first day at Royal Portrush gets underway.

The 148th Open Championship returns to Northern Ireland for only the second time in the tournament’s grand history, 68 years after first visiting Portrush in 1951, and features a heavily-packed Irish contingent of Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and plenty others.

But a number of Americans arrive at the final major of the year heading the pecking order, with Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods both hotly fancied after their recent form – the former unstoppable in majors over the last two years and latter claiming his 15th major at the Masters.

But there are plenty of other names in the mix from closer to home, with former world No 1 Justin Rose and in-form Englishman Matt Wallace among those to watch, while Jon Rahm is expected to challenge for his first major victory.

10th hole

Shane Lowry (-4) sinks another birdie on the 10th to move to 4-under for the first time.

7th hole

Robert MacIntyre (-4) joins him there with a longish putt on seven that drops in.

16th

Charley Hoffman (-3) has the chance to join them there but he leaves his birdie putt on 16 short of the hole.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:37

7th hole

A birdie for Beef (-2) brings him back down to 2-under.

5th hole

Xander Schuaffle (-3) birdies the fifth and moves within one of the lead. He's started very well.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:41

Disaster on 16

Hoffman (-2) had a birdie putt to move him to a share of the lead but instead he comes away with a bogey and falls back to 2-under.

It's a similar fate for Darren Clarke (-1) and James Sugrue (a) (-1) who both miss their par putts and drop shots as well.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:42

9th hole

Alex Noren (-2) drops a shot on the ninth for an opening 34.

12th hole

Langasque (-3) moves himself within one with a birdie on 12.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:47

The breeze has started to pick up which will make the course a degree more difficult to say the least.

A mistake from Lowry on 11 leaves him with a long put for par back up the slope on the green.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:48

4th hole

Canada's Corey Connors (-2) continues the impressive start to his first ever Open Championship with a round of par, birdie, par, birdie so far.

3rd hole

McIlroy (+4) has a tough job to save par on three. His tee shot went off the back of the green and his second left him with a testing putt.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:51

Out in 35 for Sergio

Garcia (-1) drops a shot on the ninth to go out in 1-under par.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:54

2nd hole

Kevin Kisner (-2) you beauty! He matches Beef with an eagle putt on the second hole.

3rd hole

McIlroy (+5) drops another shot and falls further behind. Nine shots off the lead now.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 10:56

17th hole

More bad news for Northern Ireland as Darren Clarke (evs) drops back to level par with back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17.
