Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Follow the latest scores from The Open live as the first day at Royal Portrush gets underway.

The 148th Open Championship returns to Northern Ireland for only the second time in the tournament’s grand history, 68 years after first visiting Portrush in 1951, and features a heavily-packed Irish contingent of Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and plenty others.

But a number of Americans arrive at the final major of the year heading the pecking order, with Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods both hotly fancied after their recent form – the former unstoppable in majors over the last two years and latter claiming his 15th major at the Masters.

But there are plenty of other names in the mix from closer to home, with former world No 1 Justin Rose and in-form Englishman Matt Wallace among those to watch, while Jon Rahm is expected to challenge for his first major victory.

The end to the rounds today are where players have lost the most shots. The 15th hole is playing as the 3rd most difficult hole, the 16th is the 5th hardest, the 17th the 4th and the 18th is the 2nd.

The seventh hole does for Tiger Woods (+4) and Patrick Reed (evs) who both make bogeys. From where Tiger ended up in the rough a six was the best he could hope for. Regardless Tiger's moving in the wrong direction.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 17:17

Tony Finau (-1) completes his front nine with another par. He goes out in 35 with just one birdie on the fourth. Justin Rose remains a shot further back after making bogey on the fourth. He's covered well but seems to be saving par putts more than attempting birdie putts.

10 minutes and one hole separated Rory McIlroy from adulation to capitulation on a difficult day at Royal Portrush:

Michael Jones18 July 2019 17:24

Good discipline from Louis Oosthuizen (-3) sets him up for a birdie chance on the 15th. One that he takes with joy. The South African moves on up to within one of the leaders.

John Rahm continues on his merry way. He moves to (-3) with a birdie on the seventh. A bogey on 8 is followed by a birdie on 9 for Dustin Johnson who goes thru the front nine on level par.

Tyrell Hatton, where've you come from?

He's been slowly grinding his way through the course to the finish but his second shot sees him on the right side of the 17th green. A long, long putt across the green to the hole is taken on by Hatton and he hits it with just the right amount of pace so that it falls gently into the cup.

Hatton moves to (-4) for a tie of the lead.

Check out this for a run. Ryan Fox from New Zealand was 3-over after 11 holes. He then went birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, par, birdie, birdie.

Six birdies in the last seven holes puts him at (-3) and one shot off the lead in the clubhouse. Incredible stuff.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 17:43

A front nine 41 for Tiger Woods shows how the Masters champion has struggled in this round. He looks off somehow, whether through injury or lack of preparation the best of Tiger Woods isn't on show.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 17:50

Keep going John Rahm (-4), he's through the first eight holes and has picked up four birdies for a share of the lead. As Ryan Fox has just proven, accurate fairway to green on the back nine will yield up opportunities to score.

Brooks Koepka drops back to (-3) as he pushes his par putt of the 17th to the right of the hole. So too does Tyrell Hatton (-3) who misses a longish putt of the last to pick up his first dropped shot of the round.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 17:54

JB Holmes moves up to (-3) after a run of six pars on the bounce. He rolls in a birdie putt on the 12th.
