Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow live updates from the Rugby World Cup as France look to make it two from two when they take on USA this morning.

The French came through an epic thriller against Argentina in their opening match, with Les Bleus now favourite to join England in qualifying for the quarter-finals.

But first they must overcome the challenge posed by Gary Gold’s USA side, who were thumped 45-7 in their opener against Eddie Jones’ men last week. Follow live updates below:

When is is?

France vs USA kicks off at 4.45pm Japan Standard Time, which is 8.45am BST, on Wednesday 2 October.

Where can I watch it?

ITV4 will be broadcasting the match, with coverage starting at 8.15am BST.

You can also live stream the fixture on your laptop, phone or tablet via the ITV hub.

Here come the French again, and Sofiane Guitoune is put into space on the left.

What pace! The 13 flies away from the tracking tacklers and weaves infield, and then hurls a wide ball to Alivereti Raka, who is in...

But the pass is ruled forward! Ambitious from Guitoune, and there were players between him and Raka that could have been fed. A missed opportunity.

France pump the legs with their souped-up front row on the pitch, and Poirot and Slimani are too fine scrummagers, who put the pressure on the USA feed.

USA just about survive, and Shaun Davies' eventual clearance is solid enough.

France really haven't executed at all. The USA poach ball again after Alivereti Raka is worked into the game, and now the Eagles attack, and attack nicely.

Blaine Scully jinks his way into the French 22, and onwards Marcel Brache goes.

AJ MacGinty oddly opts to kick despite a hint of an overlap, and Alivereti Raka is safe beneath it, taking a mark.

France pinch the lineout, too, and opt to run, with Yoann Huget making good ground with a dive back inside against the pushing US defence.

Sent skywards from the base of a subsequent ruck, the ball tumbles into a leaping Huget's arms, but the Toulouse veteran can't take it.

The ball has rather resembled a ball of soap tonight. Maxime Medard, newly-inserted into the French back three, knocks on with his first touch.

Camille Lopez gets his side out of a bit of self-inflicted bother after Rabah Slimani drops a low pass backwards, raking a brilliant 60-yard punt beyond Mike Te'o, and into touch on the left. Excellent clearance.

Another France error - flung wide to Alivereti Raka, dropped from the hip, and slow to regather the ball, allowing AJ MacGinty to fly-hack the ball on.

France concede a penalty! Decision for USA to make - points or corner?

Harry Latham-Coyle2 October 2019 10:11

Points it is. They'll keep eating away at this lead...

Harry Latham-Coyle2 October 2019 10:12

PENALTY! Over it goes!

Three points in it. AJ MacGinty strikes his shot at goal cleanly and bisects the timbers.

France are in real bother.

France 12-9 USA
