The Six Nations champions took charge of Pool D with a second successive win that could lead to a last-eight clash against France or Argentina.
Australia, though, might be hurtling towards a knockout tie with England, who are coached by former Wallabies boss Eddie Jones, despite staging a spectacular second-half fightback.

17 min: Australia 0-10 Wales
We've currently gone to TMO as Romain Poite reviews what seemed to be a late tackle from Michael Hooper on Dan Biggar. It looked high but there was the smallest of efforts made to wrap the arms. No card but Wales are awarded another penalty.
18 min: Australia 0-10 Wales
Wales kick to the 22. From the line-out, the ball is turned over... but the Welsh immediately return the favour! Aaron Wainwright gets stuck in at the breakdown, and it's the Wallabies who are penalised. We go to the scrum.
19 min: Australia 0-10 Wales
It's a huge nudge from the Australians as the Welsh pack is forced back. Josh Navidi managed to pick up play but he was overrun by a number of yellow shirts, with the penalty following soon after for not releasing. Bernard Foley find touch on the Welsh 22 to set themselves up in a promising attacking position.
21 min: Australia 5-10 Wales (Ashley-Cooper try)
Australia capitalised on that. From the line-out, the Wallabies went through the phases as they pushed their opponents further and further back to their own line. After setting up, it was spun to Bernard Foley who found the space down in the right-hand corner with a high, hanging kick. Adam Ashley-Cooper came at it with speed, catching the ball in open arms. Josh Adams managed to make the tap tackle, briefly sending him to the turf, but the 14 shot strike back up to dive over.
Foley fails to make the conversion.
24 min: Australia 5-10 Wales
Australia scrum on their own 10. It's clean as Bernard Foley boots clear to Josh Adams deep inside his own half.
26 min: Australia 5-10 Wales
End-to-end stuff at the moment! Josh Adams darts down the left flank and nudges it inward with a grubber kick. He tries his best to get around Marika Koroibete but the Aussie wing just about keeps his opposite man from getting his hands back on the ball. Wales come pouring in but the Wallabies hold firm to clear the danger from their own try line.
28 min: Australia 5-10 Wales
It's back down the other end of the pitch. It's Samu Kerevi's turn to do some damage as he skips past one red shirt before charging into Dan Biggar near the Welsh white line. The fly-half puts in a big, try-saving hit, and the ball is knocked forward. We go back for an earlier Australia penalty, about five metres out from Wales' 22.
28 min: Australia 8-10 Wales (Foley penalty)
The Aussie 10 makes the kick this time. The men in yellow two points behind.
Dan Biggar has also gone off for a HIA following that tackle on Samu Kerevi. Wales will be hoping it's nothing serious. Rhys Patchell steps in as a replacement.
