Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Despite their recent success in the competition, Atletico Madrid are not often talked about as one of the favourites to win the Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo has so often been the difference against Atleti, but in Madrid it was two Uruguayan centre halves who not only dealt with the five time Champions League winner, but also provided scoring touches of their own. The 2-0 victory at the Wanda Metropolitano could be a sign that Champions League glory may finally cease to elude Simeone’s side.

That will only serve to further frustrate Juventus. They too have lost two finals in the last five years, and the signing of Ronaldo was supposed to be the addition to push them over the line. After the 2-0 loss in Madrid, Juve are staring elimination in the white of its eyes.

Their top scorer produced a match winning performance in Turin last season, but Allegri’s side don’t necessarily need to rely on Ronaldo to perform a miracle. Paulo Dybala, Miralem Pjanic and Mario Mandzukic are all capable of making the difference in one way or another. Follow live coverage below.

Match preview.

What time does it start?

Juventus vs Atletico Madrid kicks off at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday 12th March

Where can I watch it?

Juventus vs Atletico Madrid will be shown live on BT Sport 3.

Player to watch:

He’s had a fresh breath of confidence since leaving Chelsea, and Alvaro Morata was a handful in the first leg having had a headed goal dubiously disallowed before setting up Gimenez’ strike from the corner. He also scored a brace against Real Sociedad at the beginning of the month, proving a useful option with Diego Costa struggling for form. Could he be the man to grab a crucial away goal and set Juve a near impossible mountain to climb?

Form Guide:

Despite having never won the Champions League Pep Guardiola’s side are one of the favourites to lift the trophy this season but the Manchester City manager isn’t letting that distract the players:

"We cannot deny how strong other teams are," said Guardiola. "You have to dream, to point as high as possible and at the same time accept there are other teams thinking the same.

"All the clubs that are in the knockout stages want to win this title. It is difficult. This competition is judged that when you are out of the last 16 it is a big disaster. My perspective is completely different.

"People say it is easy. Imagine to get into the last eight teams in Europe? Of course we want to win it but the other teams also have this desire.

"People think that because Real Madrid are not there, this competition will be easy. Of course I thought they were the favourites but there still remains incredible clubs to beat."

Man City vs Schalke

The stats all look good for Man City:

On 27 previous occasions sides that have scored three or more goals away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie have all gone on to progress, including six after winning 3-2.

Manchester City have won each of their past three meetings with FC Schalke in European competition.

They have only lost one of their 10 previous home meetings with German opponents in all European competitions, winning 7 and drawing 2.

They went down 3-1 in the 2013-14 Champions League group stages against Bayern Munich.

It's been the round of comebacks in the Champions League. Manchester United scoring three against PSG and Ajax four against Real Madrid.

Can Schalke and Juventus draw on that magic to give us another wonderful night in Europe?

3 mins: Man City 0 - 0Schalke

Zinchenko pushes forward on the left wing before sliding the ball inside to David Silva, Silva tries to slip Aguero in behind the defence but Serdar makes a crucial interception.

City win a corner that Gundogan plays short, Schalke defend well though and break quickly with Embolo on the counter attack. Embolo puts the ball into the box from the right wing but no-one gets on the end of the cross and the ball goes out of play.

6 mins: Man City 0 - 0 Schalke

The Schalke fans are buzzing in the crowd, they're having a great time, chanting and cheering but Man City have a free kick to the left of Schalke's area near the touchline.

David Silva whips it in and Danilo tries to flick it on, the ball almost falls for Sane but Schalke recover to boot it away.
