After Georgia and Fiji raised the curtain on today’s action, it’s the turn of the two group runners-up to take centre stage in the third-place play-off. It’s of course not the game that either wanted to be in, with Ireland coming unstuck against England earlier in the tournament while Scotland lost their decider to the French, but both sides have signalled their intent to end the year on a high with the Six Nations just around the corner.
Ireland will be led by returning captain Johnny Sexton who has recovered from a hamstring strain suffered in the opening game against Wales, while Scotland turn to debutant fly-half Jaco van der Welt in the hope of finding a replacement for injured duo Finn Russell and Adam Hastings. Follow the live updates below.
77 mins: Georgia 17-38 Fiji
Georgia are refusing to go down without a fight and they come within inches of the line, only for two massive Fijian tackles to send them into reverse. They crucially retain possession, and draw the offside penalty out of the defence that gives them a free crack at the line… TRY FOR GEORGIA!
74 mins: Georgia 17-38 Fiji
It comes to nothing as the lineout goes over the top and into the hands of Georgia, who fling it down the line with reckless abandon. The ball finds its way to wing Todua, who kicks it deep downfield, and Nadolo has to retreat to field it and kick possession to touch with a rather unconventional effort.
72 mins: Georgia 17-38 Fiji
Georgia look to try and go wide but the ball comes loose in contact and allows Nadolo to pinch possession, before they win a penalty as the defence comes in from the side in an effort to win back the ball. Volavola kicks to touch just outside the 22 and Fiji sense another chance to score here.
68 mins: Georgia 17-38 Fiji
Well who saw that coming? Georgia earn some much-needed respite with a breakdown penalty and it allows them to kick into the Fijian half for what feels like the first time since the restart. They take full advantage though as flanker Beka Saghinadze charges through the defence, high knees and all, and despite Botia’s best efforts he manages to swivel and ground the ball next to the uprights, providing the simplest of conversions.
64 mins: Georgia 10-38 Fiji
Georgia are crumbling, sadly. Fiji kick to the corner following an offside penalty and they set up the dummy drive. Instead, the ball is passed out to Nemani Nadolo on the crash ball, and he smashes through Saghinadze and Abzhandadze to ease over for his third of the match - the 22nd of his career that puts him level with all-time leading Fiji try scorer Niki Goneva. Volavola converts.
63 mins: Georgia 10-31 Fiji
TRY FOR FIJI! A HAT-TRICK FOR NADOLO!
60 mins: Georgia 10-31 Fiji
That’s simply lovely rugby from Fiji. Again they go to ‘The Bus’ Tuisova on the right, and that creates the space on the left for Volavola to spot space in behind the defence. He chips through perfectly for Nemani Nadolo to chase after, and the Leicester wing slides onto the loose ball and continues over the line on the greasy surface to score his second try of the match! Volavola strikes the upright with the conversion but Fiji are starting to turn on the style.
54 mins: Georgia 10-26 Fiji
What a try that is! It’s all created by Tuisova, as Lomani goes blindside and throws a miss-pass out to the wing who breaks through two attempted tackle and romps down the wing. The cover defence shoves him towards touch, but he offloads one-handed to Mesulame Kunavula to score on his debut! Surely that swings the balance in favour of Fiji now, especially as Volavola adds another tricky conversion.
