The two met at Old Trafford on the reserve day after play was postponed for rain on Tuesday

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Kiwis posted 239 following Tuesday's rain delay and looked destined to cruise home when they removed Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli with the new ball. But a brilliant fightback from Ravi Jadeja and MS Dhoni saw India roar back into it before Trent Boult's saw off Jadeja before Dhoni was run out in dramatic fashion at the death.
New Zealand will now face either England or Australia in Sunday's showpiece.

The hover cover has been taken off and then put back on, and the ground staff look to be retrieving the covers.
It sounds like there might be more rain in the air. You'd think even the finest of drizzles would send this to tomorrow.
Two minutes until the scheduled inspection, when the day's last rites will surely be delivered...
The umpires are out there, but there's a great beige sheet threatening to engulf them as they inspect, which suggests a postponement may be imminent.
The umpires are having a chat with the head groundsman, and Richard Illingworth is having a look at his watch. This is all a bit farcical now. I can't truly see the point of rushing through a 20-over game this evening with a wet outfield when there is a chance to get a fuller game in tomorrow, and we have the reserve day at our disposal.
The forecast isn't fantastic tomorrow - indeed it is not dissimilar to today's, with rain coming in in the early afternoon. But there should be time enough to get through 53.5 overs, you'd feel. It would be a resumption rather than a reset, with New Zealand playing out their final 23 balls and then India chasing from there.
THERE WILL BE NO MORE PLAY THIS EVENING - THE GAME WILL RESUME AT 10.30 TOMORROW MORNING
Right then. Cancel your plans for tomorrow, there's cricket to be played. New Zealand will resume on 211-5, with 3.5 overs left in their innings. India will then have the full 50 overs to chase down whatever score they finish up with, assuming, of course, that there is no more rain.
Advantage India, then, with fears of a sticky 20-over chase this evening allayed and time to prepare and strategise ahed of a chase somewhere in the region of 230, you'd think.
