The Nurburgring’s return to the Formula One calendar for the first time in seven years has not been short on drama, with Friday’s running completely washed out and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll ruled out with illness, meaning another call-up for Nico Hulkenberg in his place.
Qualifying also produced a surprise as Bottas left his rivals in his dust, producing a lap nearly 0.4s faster than championship leader Hamilton, who just squeezed onto the front row ahead of Red Bull’s Verstappen. There was also welcome relief for Ferrari with Charles Leclerc taking fourth ahead of the second Red Bull of Alex Albon, ahead of the two Renaults, but Sebastian Vettel starts outside of the top 10 once again after qualifying 11th. Hamilton carries Schumacher’s helmet out with him onto the podium, where he stands on the top step for a record-equalling 91st time since his debut more than 13 years ago. You’d put his mortgage on him beating that between now and the end of the season, but the big question is where will he leave the record once he finally wraps up his own career?
LEWIS HAMILTON
Mick Schumacher, son of Michael, presents Hamilton with one of his father’s red helmets from his day’s with Mercedes.
"I don’t even know what to say. When you grow up watching someone, and you idiolise them, what they’re able to do week on week, and what Michael was able to achieve, seeing his dominance for so long, I didn’t think I’d be anywhere near Michael’s record.
“I couldn’t have done it without this incredible team, with everyone supporting me, thank you so much to the team.”
LEWIS HAMILTON
"Had a good start, and we both understeered into it. Then Valtteri was in my blind spot and I didn’t know where he was, and then he came back and I thought ‘good on you’, I was actually impressed with that. Then I got into a pace and he had the lock-up.
“You can see by the Red Bull pace at the end, we’ve got a real fight on our hands. I’m knackered.”
DANIEL RICCIARDO
"It’s been a while, it feels like the first podium all over again. It’s been two years and it all feels so fresh. We’ve waited a long time for this so the whole team is going to soak it up.
“It’s real, it’s going to happen (Cyril Abiteboul’s tattoo). We’ll have to do some thinking now, probably something to do with me, but with a German flavour as this is the place we’ve done it, so a tip of the hat to something traditionally German too.”
MAX VERSTAPPEN
"Overall it was a good race, Iw as just trying to follow Lewis once Valtteri dropped out and I was just trying to do my own race. I think our pace was good bu they were just a bit too fast, but to get the fastest lap and the extra point was good.
"The tyres are already cold when you leave the box, and I just didn’t understand why the safety car was going so slow.
“We finished second today and I think that’s where we belong.”
