England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

ENG 106-2, Burns 57, Root 33

The crowd are giving Nathan Lyon a bit of stick. A big roar goes up every time Lyon catches the ball as it is returned to him.

He won't mind as he knows the England captain is struggling out there against him.

Root takes a single off Lyon's last ball.

Paine and Starc have a long conversation about how to attack the batsmen.

Starc tries a yorker that Root guides to gully, there's a mis-field Root scrambles up the pitch for a single.

ENG 108-2, Burns 57, Root 35

Oh unlucky Rory Burns. Starc drifts onto Burns' pads and he middles it into the leg side but it's stopped by a diving wide mid-on.

Only one run from the over.

ENG 109-2, Burns 57, Root 36

It's taken until 3:30pm on day three but the Old Trafford crowd finally have something to cheer and chant about.

England are batting well, Australia are having to toil. Nathan Lyon is the target of the crowd's joy, they build it up as the ball comes back to him and cheer when he catches it.

Lyon only goes for one run in his over and Mitchell Starc will continue. Tim Paine is yelling encouragement to his team from behind the stumps, there aren't many worried looks from the Australians but there's a few passive ones.

ENG 109-2, Burns 57, Root 36

Root is felled by Starc.

Starc gets the ball to rear up and nip back at Root, it hits him in his gentlemans and Root drops to the deck.

Rory Burns has a chuckle and so do the umpires.

Root checks himself over to make sure everything is okay, he takes a drink and gets reset. There are a few knowing smiles from the fielders, they all know it's an uncomfortable feeling.

Root took a long time to get over that but he's ready again.

Starc sends the ball across him but Root leaves it well alone. He defends the last ball and Starc has a maiden over.

Nathan Lyon's long spell is over. Josh Hazlewood is coming back from the James Anderson end.

ENG 111-2, Burns 59, Root 36

Hazlewood is into his 12th over but he's still making Burns defend well. A loose ball on Burns' pads is flicked away for two runs.

Hazlewood digs the final ball in short and Burns attempts to pull it but misses the ball as it goes down leg.
