Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.
Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.
In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

Stokes c Smith b Starc 26 (62)
ENG 244-7, Buttler 5, Archer 1
England are in serious trouble now.

Better from Buttler.
Starc gives him a half volley and Buttler drives it through the covers for four runs.

England have lost the two wickets they didn't want to this morning. Buttler is out of form and Archer is very weak against the short ball.
The 50 runs needed to avoid the follow on looks a long way away
ENG 248-7, Buttler 9, Archer 1
Josh Hazlewood has a short leg for Jofra Archer. It's Matthew Wade and he's making his presence known to Archer, giving him a few verbals in between deliveries.
Hazlewood gives Archer three short balls out of six and he evades them all.
ENG 248-7, Buttler 9, Archer 1
Starc has been brilliant in this spell. The ball is moving and he's targeting the stumps more as a result he's getting his rewards in the form of two wickets.

England's 250 comes up to a little applause as Buttler guides the ball to third man for two.
