From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. England had not lost a Test at their Birmingham stronghold since 2008 and toasted victory in each of their previous 11 matches here across all formats. Australia, meanwhile, had lost 15 successive games on Warwickshire's turf, dating all the way back to 2001.
But, just three weeks on from a historic World Cup success, the second part of English cricket's golden summer got off to a dreadful start as they were rolled over well before tea.

Another poor decision. Too much seam movement from Pattinson and shooting down leg on the angle. Root looked relatively confident reviewing. It didn't look out on first viewing and didn't get any better on replay.
Root had got off the mark earlier in the over with a trademark back foot punch through the covers.
England 25-1 (Target 398), J Root 4, J Roy 9, J Pattinson 0-9 (5)
England 30-1 (Target 398), J Root 8, J Roy 10, P Cummins 1-10 (4)
Sheesh, there's no need for that! Jason Roy flashes at an in-nipper from Cummins outside off stump and is beaten by the movement back towards him so comprehensively that he succeeds in missing it by a couple of inches. Past the timbers it zips, but that's a risky shot in any situation, let alone this one.
Root pushes four down the ground to close the over.
A tough job, of course, but by our reckoning that's the fourteenth decision Aleem Dar and Joel Wilson have got wrong in this first Ashes Test...
England 34-1 (Target 398), J Root 8, J Roy 14, J Pattinson 0-13 (5.3)
Yum! Jason Roy gets his shot right on this occasion, slightly closer to the body and thus more easily driven, and lusciously done through the covers.
And now there'll be a delay, some problem with the stumps. We wait...
Pattinson is back at his mark and ready to continue, with a buzzing stump mic the cause of the delay. All is now in order.
Or not! One ball, and more curious peering at the poles. Aleem Dar beckons for assistance. Peculiar.
England 34-1 (Target 398), J Root 8, J Roy 14, J Pattinson 0-13 (6)
A swap of stumps and the over finally concludes.
England 40-1 (Target 398), J Root 9, J Roy 18, P Cummins 1-16 (5)
Another languid cover drive from Jason Roy brings four, but Cummins responds nicely with a zippy ball backwards of a length to test the strength of Roy's thigh pad. Evolving into a rather enjoyable battle, this one.
A first bowling change of the innings, Pattinson off, Peter Siddle on. He bowled two pretty ordinary overs last night.
