It will clearly take more than blustering wind and hammering rain to stop runwaway leader Jordan Spieth so far after he opened up a two-shot lead, posting a one under-par 69, in the second round of on Friday.
Spieth, who encountered the worst of the weather in both of the opening rounds, stands at -6 with American compatriot Matt Kuchar, two strokes behind after his very solid 71.
But don't count out the home contingent - Ian Poulter, who was second at Birkdale when it last staged the Open in 2008, is on three under alongside US Open champion Brooks Koepka with a back in form Rory McIlroy only five off the lead behind them.

A 3-2 start for young Canadian Austin Connelly as he moves to three under par for the day and four under for the tournament after just two holes.
Ian Poulter is the leading Englishman at Royal Birkdale but the start of his third round didn't go as planned. The 41-year-old bogeyed the opening hole, as did playing partner Brooks Koepka.
Rory McIlroy chips in to birdie the par-three fourth hole and move to two under par for the day and three under for the tournament.
Matt Kuchar birdies the second hole to move to within a shot of leader Jordan Spieth.
Dustin Johnson's hopes of equalling Branden Grace's third-round 62 are all but over. The American is on course for a 64 with just one hole to play.
Ian Poulter is struggling to string anything together here. He's one over for the day having parred three holes in a row following his opening-hole bogey.
Ignore what I just said. Poulter is back on level par for the day after birdying the par-four fifth.
A bogey for Rory McIlroy at the seventh sees him return to three under par.
It's an American one-two-three at the top of the leaderboard as things stand. Jordan Spieth leads at seven under par, with Matt Kuchar at six under and Brooks Koepka at five under.
