Xander Schauffele is The Open champion after carding a faultless final round to hold off the challenge of Justin Rose and win his second major championship of the year at Troon.

Schauffele, who won his first major title at the PGA Championship in May, shot a wonderful bogey-free round of 65, with six birdies, to take charge of a dramatic final round and lift the Claret Jug.

The American made crucial birdies at the 11th, 12th and 14th holes to move clear of a frustrated Rose, as well as Thriston Lawrence and overnight leader Billy Horschel, after the trio shared the lead heading into the back nine.

Schauffele’s victory means all four of this season’s majors have been won by Americans for the first time since 1982, with Scottie Scheffler winning the Masters and Bryson DeChambeau claiming the US Open.

Rose matched his best Open finish as the 43-year-old birdied the final hole to claim a share of second along with Horschel, while 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry finished sixth.

Follow all the reaction from the fourth and final round of The Open below:

Scheffler’s third shot on the first is more of a lay up than a putt attempt, and he’ll secure par.

On six, Rahm has worked himself another birdie attempt, but this one falls short. He’s at three pars and three birdies today (and -1).

More big names teeing off now, with Rose and Schauffele taking the stage. Slightly to the right and into the first cut for the Englishman, while the American’s shot is more central.

Mickelson and MacIntyre are coming to the end of their day, and the Scot finishes on +9 having shot three-over today. Mickelson pulled one shot back to end on +11.

Lowry has made par on the first, so he stays on -1. Dan Brown has teed off now, avoiding the deepest bit of the rough.

Thomas does end up with the triple bogey on the first, so he’s probably out of contention already with +3.

Shane Lowry is the latest to tee off, and he starts with a clean strike right down the middle of the fairway. He’s unlucky with the second shot, as it briefly looks like it’ll stay on the green before rolling back and into the sand trap.

Thomas’ second tee shot attempt earlier actually wasn’t very good – it landed right in the fairway bunker, so he’s looking at a triple bogey.

Rahm continues a solid day so far with another par, so he remains on one-under.

Some big names in the practice area now, with Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele not far off getting started for the day.

Justin Thomas, who starts the day on level par, begins by skewing his tee shot to the right and straight out of bounds. His second effort is better, but he’s potentially looking at a double bogey.

Rahm finds the green in regulation but it has a little bit too much on the spin, and it’s a difficult birdie shot. He makes a great effort, skimming the hole, but will have to take par.

Johnson has birdied the fifth to go to +1.

On 18, Spieth sinks a great birdie putt, curling round from right to left, to end the competition on +5, having shot 70 today.

On four, Rahm finds the edge of the rough on the fairway with his second shot, and he should have a birdie attempt.

Playing partners Day and Homa have both bogeyed the 10th, while Spieth makes the walk to 18 having just missed the birdie chance. He stays on +6.

Sung-jae Im, who had some brilliant form in the morning yesterday, has teed off too.

Rahm has sunk two three birdies to take himself to one-under. One to keep an eye on.

Jason Day has gone to -4 for the day and he joins Alex Noren on par – the Swede has two birdies through the first three holes.

Mickelson and MacIntyre are still plugging away on 15, with the former on +12 and the Scot on +7.

Spieth is up to +6 as he approaches the end of his day.

Jason Day has three birdies over his last four holes, and he’s just +1 now.

Cantlay hasn’t been able to capitalise on his early birdie at the first – he’s missed three birdie shots in a row on the next three holes.

Dan Brown has arrived ahead of his tee time in around an hour – can he continue his historic weekend?

Dustin Johnson and Colin Morikawa are the latest to tee off, starting the day two-over. They’ll be followed by Jon Rahm and Alex Noren.

Jason Day has his second birdie of the day, so he’s moved to +2.

MacIntyre and Mickelson, on +7 and +10 respectively, tee off on the Railway 11th.

On 14, a nice tee shot gives Spieth the chance at a birdie, while Brian Harman has finished his front nine with three straight bogeys, taking him to +10.

Great imagination from Mickelson to punch out of the rough on 11. He doesn’t make the green but he should make par anyway. Rob MacIntyre, his playing partner for the day, bogeys and goes to +7.

Calum Scott, the leading amateur, has teed off with Manassero. They’re starting the day on +3.

Patrick Cantlay is looking to gain early ground and he does so straight away, birdieing the first to go to two-over.

On 10, Rob MacIntyre bogeys to move to +6.
