Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 2018 Ryder Cup is underway and what a turnaround we've seen. The United States took the early lead with a dominant display in the morning but Europe bounced back in the afternoon foursomes.

The visitors at Le Golf National led 3-1 after the morning fourballs after Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson all impressed on their way to victories over their European foes. But the hosts came roaring back in the afternoon taking all four matches to completely swing the contest and seize the momentum heading into Saturday

Here's how it all unfolded:

Rose & Stenson vs Johnson & Fowler (A/S)

And we're already underway. Dustin Johnson starts off the afternoon foursomes immediately after Fleetwood and Molinari's victory was confirmed. Partnered again by Fowler, he finds the heart of the first fairway. Justin Rose, returning to his relationship with Henrik Stenson, follows him.

Jonathan Liew's take on what we've seen this morning:

1) Oh my god, what a course this is. Brilliantly calibrated, full of drama.

2) Europe need Rory McIlroy to come good. Like, now.

3) Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton shot a combined 63 and lost. Both unlucky to be benched for the afternoon.

4) Johnson and Fowler have the potential to be America's star combo this time round. A great mix of styles, even if you suspect the conversation isn't exactly stellar.

5) Don't wear Italian plimsolls when you're walking around a dewy golf course. I may as well have gone barefoot.

Justin Rose & Henrik Stenson vs Dustin Johnson & Rickie Fowler (A/S)

Fowler and Stenson both find the green and it's routine pars to get us underway.

Rory McIlroy & Ian Poulter vs Bubba Watson & Webb Simpson (A/S)

Boos ring from the grandstand for Bubba Watson. It's great to have golf with atmosphere but there's no need for that.

Justin Rose & Henrik Stenson vs Dustin Johnson & Rickie Fowler (A/S)

Both teams stay well clear of the water on the par-3 second. Rose plays a nicer bunker shot and Stenson has a putt for the winbut pushes it below the hole. He'll be disappointed with that.

Rory McIlroy & Ian Poulter vs Bubba Watson & Webb Simpson (1UP)

McIlroy has left Poulter in a reasonable position hitting into the first but the miracle man falters and finds the water left of the green. Webb Simpson plays one safely into the centre and that's a simple two-putt for the hole.

Sergio Garcia & Alex Noren vs Phil Mickelson & Bryson DeChambeau

It's first appearance for all these four. Mickelson and DeChambeau get a much better reception than Bubba.

Sergio Garcia & Alex Noren vs Phil Mickelson & Bryson DeChambeau (A/S)

Sergio backs away from his tee-shot at the first fiddling with his grip. Wrestles with his grip almost put him out of the game in the past but he gets away safely in the end.
