From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference.Patrick Reed held off the challenge of Ryder Cup team-mates Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth to claim his first major title in the Masters, as Rory McIlroy suffered more Masters misery.
Reed carded a final round of 71 at Augusta National to finish 15 under par and a shot ahead of Fowler, with 2015 champion Spieth another stroke back after an astonishing challenge faltered at the last.
Spieth had rallied from nine shots behind at the start of the day to claim a share of the lead with his ninth birdie of the day on the 16th, setting up the chance to equal the course record of 63 or even match the major championship mark of 62.
But a terrible drive on the 18th for the second time this week led to a crucial bogey and more Augusta demons, after he squandered a five-shot lead with nine to play in 2016 in defence of his title.

Justin Thomas (-6) and Jordan Spieth (-11)A huge move from Spieth as he putts in from off the green on the 12th to birdie and moves into outright second place. That cuts Reed's lead back to three.
Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-10)Now it's Reed who comes up with the error as he pitches short of the ninth flag and spins all the way back off the green. McIlroy pitches a beauty to birdie terrirtory, and Reed will have to do a lot here just to save par. Reed does well with the chip though and that allows him to make a good par save, and McIlroy can't take advantage as he misses the birdie effort. The chances are starting to run out for McIlroy.
Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-12)
Mickelson, Watson - add Jordan Spieth to the memorable shots at Augusta. From the pinestraw on 13, Spieth takes out the hybrid and thumps a do-or-die shot towards Rae's Creek. Does it make it? YES! An incredible shot that leaves Spieth a 12-footer uphill for eagle. He just pushes it left though, but takes the birdie and he's just two shots off the lead! Thomas meanwhile bogeys and drops a shot.
Justin Rose (-7) and Louis Oosthuizen (-4)On the 14th, Rose gets another birdie on his card and that moves him to seven-under for the day.
Charley Hoffman (-6) and Tony Finau (-7)Hoffman may take the plaudits for his hole-in-one on 16, but Finau has reeled off six straight birdies and is heading to the 18th on seven-under, which is some achievement given his horror injury on Wednesday.
Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroyReed just misses his birdie effort on the 10th, and McIlroy also pars to leave him four shots off the lead with eight to play.
Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-10)Reed is in big trouble after teeing off into the trees on the 11th, and McIlroy thunders a beauty down the fairway. Reed does have a line out of the woodwork though and lays up short of the water, while McIlroy goes right with a poor approach and misses the green by some way. Reed is up first, and produces a lovely effort that gives him a chance at par, and McIlroy leaves a slightly longer shot, albeit one he would expect to get.
Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-12)Spieth misses a chance to move to within one shot of the lead, and has to take a par on the 14th.
Rickie Fowler (-11) and Jon Rahm (-10)Fowler goes for the pin on 12, and it's a lovely effort. Rahm also finds the putting surface and that's two good tee shots on the dangerous par three. Rahm misses his mid-range putt but holes out for par, but Fowler nails his birdie effort!
Patrick Reed (-13) and Rory McIlroy (-9)Mistake from Reed! The leader delicately rolls his putt down the slope, but just at the last second it breaks left and loops around the cup and out. That bogey means Spieth is within one shot of the lead! McIlroy also misses his putt, and that bogey could well end his hopes of a first Masters title.
Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-12)Meanwhile Spieth has an eagle chance on 15 after finding the green in two.
Patrick Reed (-13) and Rory McIlroy (-9)Reed goes for it on the 12th and it pays off as he finds the green from a similar area to where Spieth holed out from. McIlroy follows suit and is on the fringe, and that's a good response after the two bogey scores there.
Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-9)McIlroy misses yet another birdie putt, taking a par that simply is not good enough at this stage. But what about Reed? "COME ON!" he screams as his birdie effort rolls in and he moves straight back to 14-under.
Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-13)Spieth's tentative eagle effort looks short, and is short, but it just keeps rolling and leaves him a short putt for birdie that keeps him within a shot of the lead.
