Patrick Reed held off the challenge of Ryder Cup team-mates Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth to claim his first major title in the Masters, as Rory McIlroy suffered more Masters misery.

Reed carded a final round of 71 at Augusta National to finish 15 under par and a shot ahead of Fowler, with 2015 champion Spieth another stroke back after an astonishing challenge faltered at the last.

Spieth had rallied from nine shots behind at the start of the day to claim a share of the lead with his ninth birdie of the day on the 16th, setting up the chance to equal the course record of 63 or even match the major championship mark of 62.

But a terrible drive on the 18th for the second time this week led to a crucial bogey and more Augusta demons, after he squandered a five-shot lead with nine to play in 2016 in defence of his title.

Patrick Reed (-13) and Rory McIlroy (-12)Oh wow! Reed misses his birdie putt is staring the prospect of being level with McIlroy after just two holes, but the Northern Irishman inexplicably misses a four-foot putt and has to accept a disappointing birdie, meaning Reed keeps hold of the lead by just a shot.

Justin Rose (-6) and Louis Oosthuizen (-3)The lovely start from Rose continues at the seventh as he birdies from close range, although playing partner Oosthuizen finally gets a shot back on the sixth as he birdies.

Rafael Cabrera Bello (+2) and Tiger Woods (+1)Trying to end with a flourish, Woods tries for a fancy birdie effort and gets it all wrong, leaving himself a difficult par putt that he also misses. That means a disappointing end to a good round, and he ends the tournament one-over. But it's just great to have the 14-time major champion back, and he;s certainly back here for good.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:14

Henrik Stenson (-8) and Tommy Fleetwood (-6)Stenson somehow misses his birdie effort on four and has to make do with four consecutive pars, while Fleetwood is again hitting out of the bunker. They both take par and move on to the fifth.

Rickie Fowler (-9) and Jon Rahm (-10)This is impressive stuff from Rahm as he records another birdie at the third and moves to 10-under, just three shots off the lead. Fowler hasn't got going yet, and he remains on nine-under after three straight pars.

Justin Thomas (-6) and Jordan Spieth (-8)Finally Justin Thomas gets something going as he produces his first birdie of the day at the fifth, but he remains twoshots behind playing partner Spieth and has some work to do to get into contention.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:21

Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-11)That's how quickly things change. The momentum was with Rory right until he missed that eagle chance on two, and suddenly he misses the green on three and when Reed putts in from 14 feet for birdie, McIlroy can't rise to it and misses his par putt. A two-shot swing and suddenly the scores are back to how they started.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:24

Rickie Fowler (-9) and Jon Rahm (-9)This is a big few minutes for Reed as Rahm's charge is halted at the fourth as he bogeys, having teed off into the sand. Fowler again makes par, but that's fine as there will be plenty of chances to score on the back nine as he did last night.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:27

Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-11)And the pressure is right back on Reed! After the leader tees off to the front of the green on the par-three fourth, McIlroy goes straight at the flag and it pays off. He should have that for birdie.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:29

Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-12)That's not a great shot from Reed and leaves him facing a six-footer for par, with McIlroy watching on licking his lips at a birdie effort. Reed hits it firmly though and finds the hole, much to his relief. McIlroy gets the birdie though and cuts the lead by one.

Justin Thomas (-6) and Jordan Spieth (-8)Spieth looks nailed on for another birdie at seven, but pushes it past the right lip of the hole and that must go down as a mistake for the 2015 champion.

Haotong Li (E) and Paul Casey (-6)There's a new name on the first page of the leaderboard and that name is Paul Casey. An eagle at 13 followed by a birdie at 14 sees him move to eight-under for the day and six-under for the tournament, and he has a shot at the course record here over the closing holes.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:33

Rickie Fowler (-8) and Jon Rahm (-9)Trouble for Fowler as he hits his second on the fifth over the green and into trouble. He chips back a long way past the pin and that makes the par almost impossible, and he actually does exceptionally well to save a bogey there. Rahmn makes his par putt and takes third outright.

Haotong Li (E) and Paul Casey (-7)What a run this is from Casey as he birdies the 15th to take him to nine-under today, and he need to make up just one more shot over the last three holes to record the lowest ever score at Augusta!

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:41

Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-11)McIlroy's in trouble as he plays short of the green with his second on the fifth, but at least it's not where Fowler just went and he can still save par there. Reed, from a much better position on the fairway, doesn't take advantage and McIlroy puts the pressure on with a lovely chip onto the green that should see him save par. Reed can't birdie it, but McIlroy makes a big error when he misses the par putt and he's back to 11-under.

Justin Thomas (-6) and Jordan Spieth (-9)Spieth is working his way into this as he birdies the eighth to move to nine-under and join John Rahm in a share of third. The two out in front better look out.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 20:50

Rickie Fowler (-8) and Jon Rahm (-9)That's a huge miss for Rahm and a huge save for Fowler! The latter has been struggling so far today, and after making a mess of his chip onto the green, Fowler produces a wonderful put to hole out, save par and potentially produce the catalyst to get his round going. Rahm meanwhile misses a putt to go to double figures.

Henrik Stenson (-8) and Tommy Fleetwood (-4)Stenson finally gets a birdie on the board at the seventh, although it only makes up for the bogey at six and gets him back to eight-under. Fleetwood meanwhil ehas not got going yet, and bogeyed the sixth too to drop to four-under and out of contention.
