Sergio Garcia beat Justin Rose in a dramatic play-off for the Masters on Sunday, to win his first ever major championship.

Rose had overturned an early three-stroke deficit to lead by a shot after 16 holes, but bogeyed the 17th and then failed to convert a birdie attempt from seven feet on the last.

That left Garcia with a putt to win his first major title at the 74th attempt, but his putt from five feet slid past the hole and left the Ryder Cup team-mates tied on nine under par.

However Garcia held his nerve to win the play-off, on the day that Spanish golfing great Seve Ballesteros would have celebrated his 60th birthday.

Garcia (-9) & Rose (-10)

Here we go then, the pair are back down to the 18th tee, and they record there's little more than half an hour of daylight left for this play-off, so we might not be going on much longer regardless of what happens.

Rose wins the toss and has the honour to tee-off first. He slices it right and it's into the tree, but gets a kind bounce to come back towards the fairway, though is still in the pineneedles.

Garcia hits another perfect drive and finds the right of the fairway. Advantage Garcia.

Garcia (-9) & Rose (-9)

It's not looking good for Rose. He has a full swing, but there are trees overhanging that will prevent him from putting any air on the ball, and he also needs to get a left-to-right movement on it. Instead, he chooses to pitch out and he's only just alongside Garcia's ball, albeit having played a shot extra.

It's another blinder from Garcia! He finds the putting surface and will have another shot to win the Masters.

Rose has his third shot, and needs to put pressure on Garcia here. It's alright, but it's nothing special as it finds the middle of the green.

He had two shots to win it, but in the end Sergio Garcia needed just one to clinch his first major at the 74th attempt, with the likable Spaniard recording a birdie to spark wild celebrations. He was immediately overcome with emotions as he celebrated the success with his family and fiancee, and will shortly be presented the famous Green Jacket by Danny Willet.

Justin Rose, Masters 2017 runner-up:

Yeah, there is a consolation. He’s felt like I fell many times so it’s hard not to feel good for him. When Sergio was in the trees at 13 it looked pretty good, but that’s what this course is about. I spoke at the start that it offers chances for people to comeback and it did.

I’ve had my fair share of great things happen to me and I’m sure there’s more coming.

I felt pretty calm, I was even surprised at how icy I felt out there. I really enjoyed it and felt in control.

If there was half a chance, given it was Seve’s 60th birthday, I’d have had a go, but there was no chance, there was a pine needle behind the ball.

Sergio Garcia, Masters 2017 champion:

It’s been a long time coming. I thought I had it on 18. I felt today the calmest I’ve ever felt on a major Sunday, and even after making a couple of bogeys I felt I could still make a few shots back.

It’s amazing, to do it on his [Seve Ballesteros’] 60th birthday and to join him and [Jose Maria] Olazabal, my two idols in golf my whole life, is amazing. Jose sent me a text on Friday saying how much he believed in me and I stayed calm.

I probably hit one of the best eight irons I’ve ever hit. From the fairway we didn’t know if it hit the hole of the flag or what happened. We then saw it probably hit the flag and went about 12 feet away, and then hit one of the best putts I had.

We’re all trying to win, but we’re all people and we have to represent the game and play the way we should. We’re very respectful of each other, we cheer each other on and at the end of the day you want to beat someone, you don’t want them to lose it.

That's all from our coverage of The Masters this year, and it's left to Sergio Garcia to celebrate winning the 83rd Masters to clinch his first major at the 74th attempt. Thanks for joining us and be sure to catch all the reaction with us on Monday morning.
