England fans singing 'Its Coming Home'

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It's coming home. Well, maybe.

England are still revelling in their last-gasp World Cup penalty shootout win over Colombia on Tuesday evening. Eric Dier and Jordan Pickford were the heroes on a famous night in Moscow.

But now on to the next one. Sweden await in Samara and we'll be bringing you all the latest build-up for you throughout the day from our men on the ground in Russia.

And don't forget the other six of the last eight either. We'll be knee deep in the France, Uruguay, Brazil, Belgium, Croatia and Russia camps too so you won't miss a thing.

Penalties, we love them now right? But not every country has been quite so lucky this tournament. Spain crashed out against hosts Russia, amidst their own coaching controversy. Here's the bizarre scenes as Diego Costa seemingly tells manager Fernando Hierro that Koke will miss, and then says I told you so as his penalty is saved.

Some less light-hearted news now. Colombian players Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca have received death threats after failing to convert their penalties in the shootout against England.

This comes after yesterday's 24th anniversary of the death of Andres Escobar who was shot dead after his own goal knocked Colombia out of the 1994 World Cup. Some things are bigger than football...

You may be wondering when the next game of World Cup football is, with the two days we have had off feeling like a lifetime. But it's not long to go now as tomorrow at 3pm France take on Uruguay in the first of our quarter finals.

Here's a piece from Tim Rich on the disconnect between fans and French manager Didier Deschamps:

Lawrence Ostlere investigates the question on the lips of most England football fans at the moment:

Sweden carry no world-class talent, no obvious threat, no strong side. How do you mark a collective spirit? How do you tackle teamwork? How do you dribble through iron will?

The aftermath of Argentina's chaotic and at times laughable campaign at this World Cup continues. The inquest into Jorge Sampaoli not going particularly well for him:

One more passage of play, and Japan could have taken Belgium to penalties. But now, their coach Akira Nishino will not continue his role when his contract expires at the end of the month. How football can change in a moment.

ICYMI England's game with Sweden will be referee'd by Bjorn Kuipers. Piers Morgan thinks it sounds a tad Swedish...
