Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The quarter-finals get underway in Russia in what should be a thrilling day at the 2018 World Cup.

In the first match of the day, France return from their impressive last-16 victory over Argentina last week with a much stiffer challenge in front of them as they take on Uruguay Football in Nizhny Novgorod, with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs.

That match kicks off at 15:00, but attentions will quickly turn to the day’s evening kick-off as Brazil and Belgium collide in a heavyweight encounter that could prove to be one of the games of the tournament. With the two winners set to meet in the semi-finals next Tuesday in St Peterburg, the stakes couldn’t be any higher.

We’ll also be looking towards England quarter-final clash with Sweden on Saturday, so follow all of the live action from Russia below.

↵Will they rewrite history in the second half?

Baddiel and Skinner's 'it's coming home' is showing its timelessness across social media.

Fans are editing it the song to famous videos, films, tv shows and it's proving quite the tonic, especially on twitter where fans are getting excited for England tomorrow.

But, here's another one for your viewing for those of you who have heard the new Southgate tune.

Lyrics:

“Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape it, I cannot forget.

“Southgate you’re the one. You still turn me on. Football’s coming home again.”

It's still Pickford V Uribe for me but history will see that save slightly differently and Miguel is pulling no punches...

SECOND HALF UNDERWAY: Uruguay 0-1 France

Nathan Jacobs6 July 2018 16:03

Stuani off. Gomez on.

Bentancur off. Rodriguez on.

Uruguay ring the changes with just over half an hour to play!

Can they find an equaliser?

GOAAALLL! Uruguay 0-2 France (Griezmann, 61)

Horrible horrible horrible error from Muslera in the Uruguay goal as he parries Griezmann's powerful strike but doesn't make good contact and instead the ball canons off his hands and back into the goal.

Big goal for France and they now have a bit of breathing room.

Can Uruguay find anything to salvage from this game?

They have 30 minutes to do so.

IT'S ALL KICKING OFF!

Classic Uruguay. Where are the yellow cards?

The South Americans are not happy with France's actions as Mbappe goes down injured.

I have a feeling they might be doing the same thing if they had a 2-0 lead.

In the melee, Rodriguez and Mbappe have been booked.

We're so cruel...

Nathan Jacobs6 July 2018 16:31

Oh the irony...

Nathan Jacobs6 July 2018 16:36

5 MINUTES TO GO!

France appear to be cruising but do Uruguay have anything left in the tank?
