Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It's coming home. Well it certainly feels like it anyway.

England are into the quarter-finals of the World Cup after winning a dramatic penalty shootout against Colombia in the last-16. Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca before Eric Dier struck the winning spot kick to spark jubilant scenes in Moscow and across the country back home.

It's a well-earned rest day today but that doesn't mean the World Cup 2018 news cycle stops oh no. We'll be building up to all the quarter-final ties plus we'll have the latest from the Three Lions camp as the history of their achievement begins to sink in.

We'll also have all the latest views from our men in Russia, best pictures and video and an awful lot more throughout the day as the biggest football tournament in the world reaches the business end.

England's success on the field causes problems off it?

No members of the Royal Family or Parliament were expected to go to Russia after the controversy surrounding the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury in March.

But after success last night, reports suggest PM Theresa May has been invited to Russia. Currently she is still sticking to her initial thoughts of not attending. But what would happen if England reached the final? Let's not get ahead of ourselves now...
