From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt are playing in a token World Cup match after both teams were consigned to an early exit after losing their opening two games.

Mohamed Salah responded to claims his World Cup was over on Twitter, writing: “Everyone in Egypt is together and there is absolutely no disagreement between us. We respect each other and the relationship is great.”

The Liverpool and Egypt sensation missed Egypt’s first game against Uruguay and looked a shadow of the player he was in the 2018-19 season against Russia.

Odds

Saudi Arabia: 5/6

Egypt: 15/4

Draw: 13/5

Prediction

0-0. There’s very little to play for and even less quality on show. Even if Egypt start with Salah, who has shown he is clearly unfit, they lack the creativity to break down defences, including teams a poor as Saudi Arabia.

24 mins: Saudi Arabia 0 Egypt 1:

A terrible miss from Mo Salah! The Egypt forward should be celebrating two goals in as many minutes having been sent clear on goal, but he inexplicable chipped wide with just Al-Mosailem to beat. That said, replays suggest that Salah was offside when the ball was played so VAR would have undoubtedly involved themselves had the shot gone in.

30 mins: Uruguay 2 Russia 0: Russia are in danger of being blown away here, just in the manner that they dished out to Saudi Arabia and Egypt in their opening two games. Suarez is causing no end of trouble for the hosts' immobile defence with his pace, and is so close to finding a way past Akinfeev before Rodrigo Bentancur's follow up shot was blocked.

36 mins: RED CARD! URUGUAY 2 RUSSIA 0:

Russia's job has just got much, much harder. Booked just eight minutes earlier for a foul on Vecino, Igor Smolnikov has just launched himself into a sliding challenge to stop Laxalt. The midfielder, however, had too much speed for the right-back, and once contact brought down the Uruguayan in full flight, referee Malang Diedhiou had no other option than to show a second yellow card and then a red.

41 mins: MISSED PENALTY! SAUDI ARABIA 0 EGYPT 1:

The old man has done it! A brilliant save from Essam El-Hadary denies Al Muwallad Al-Harbi from the penalty spot! The 45-year-old flung himself to his right to tip the striker's spotkick on to the post and away to safety. It's justice done after the decision to award the penalty appeared harsh, Ahmed Fathi adjudged to have handled Yasser Al-Shahrani's cross despite having his back to the play. There might not be anything riding on this game, but that save is one of the great World Cup moments!

HALF-TIME - Uruguay 2 Russia 0:

45+4 mins: VAR REVIEW! SAUDI ARABIA 0 EGYPT 1:

In first half injury time, referee Wilmar Roldan awards Saudi Arabia a second penalty after Ali Gabr is adjudged to have pulled Fahad Al Muwallad's shirt inside the penalty area. Both players have got hold of each other, and again it seems harsh.

The official is convinced to consult the video monitors on the side of the pitch and, after doing so, sticks with his original decision! It will be another spotkick to the Saudis!

45+6 mins: GOAL! SAUDI ARABIA 1 EGYPT 1:

Salman Al Faraj takes responsibility this time, and makes no mistake! Left-footed, he sends Essam El-Hadary the wrong way to level the game up at the break.

VAR, hey?

SECOND HALF KICK-OFF: Russia have made their second substitution as Uruguay restart affairs in Samara. After Figueira Fernandes had replaced Cheryshev in the first half in the aftermath of Smolnikov's dismissal, Stanislav Chercesov has now introduced Daler Kuzyayev for Yury Gazinsky. As far as Uruguay are concerned, more of the same will do nicely.
