Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Colombia are likely to have star man James Rodriguez back from injury as they look to quickly make up for their 2-1 defeat against Japan. Carlos Sanchez received an early red card for handball which led to Shinji Kagawa’s early goal from the spot. Colombia clawed the game back but ultimately lacked the creativity and composure that Rodriguez offers them in the final third.

Centre-back Kamil Glik has returned to full training can could start for Poland after they failed to put on a good display against Senegal in their 2-1 defeat.

This will be the first ever competitive match between the two sides and a win for either team will leave their opponents scrambling on zero points. Defeat for both teams is not an option. Whatever the result, it will be a fascinating and open game.

Odds

  • Poland: 5/2
  • Colombia: 5/4
  • Draw: 12/5

Prediction

2-2. Colombia only know one way to play, and with Rodriguez back in the side they should be able to break through Poland’s defence. That said, Colombia will be exposed at the back and Robert Lewandowski will be itching to open his World Cup account.

2 mins: Cuadrado less than impressed with Arias as he gets in his way as he tracks back down Colombia's right, which results in a corner that they clear. Lewandowski has started this one with intent and earns Poland another one

5 mins: All out attack from both sides early on, Poland having the best of it, as Robert Lewandowski puts himself about.

A stoppage in play as David Ospina is caught after claiming a ball, and looks to be in some pain as he receives treatment

7 mins: Limping back to his feet, it's worth keeping an eye on Ospina for the next couple of minutes.

8 mins: Lewandowski certainly in the thick of it here, now he accidentally stands on Mina's fingers, a painful one for the defender

Molly Hudson24 June 2018 19:07

9 mins: This looks to have all the signs of a real clash of the titans. Cuadrado looks lively on the right, and they have plenty of pace and trickery to test Poland

11 mins: Szczesny greeted with a huge wave of suspense as he goes to clear, and slices it into touch. The yellow wall of Colombian fans gives that the biggest cheer yet. Brilliant atmosphere.

15 mins: The only thing missing from this frantic start is a real clear cut chance at goal. Both sides with some promising build up play, but the final ball eludes them

Molly Hudson24 June 2018 19:15

17 mins: This time it's Lewandowski on the end of a poor foul, and Sanchez is lucky to not find himself in the book

Molly Hudson24 June 2018 19:17

21 mins: There we had a good final ball, but like the rest of us when it eventually came no one was expecting it. Columbia moments earlier were one good pass from Falcao away from carving Poland open with a speedy counter

Molly Hudson24 June 2018 19:22

25 mins: Corner for Colombia as they break after Rodriguez is absolutely clattered by Pazdan in midfield. Poland clear it away, both sides getting little joy from set pieces so far
