From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Portugal are emerging as a side very likely to go far in the tournament and have a chance to show strong signs of intent against Iran. The Selecao will face either Russia or Uruguay in the round of 16 and are bidding to finish above bitter rivals Spain in the process.
Iran, who have nothing to play for, are likely to try and sit back and frustrate in a similar way to how they played when they lost 1-0 to Spain after playing six across the back line.
Cristiano Ronaldo is vying for the Golden Boot with Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku and will be itching to put a few past Portugal’s inferior opponents to bolster his tally.

Odds:
Iran: 5/1
Portugal: 4/6
Draw: 5/2
Prediction:
2-0. Iran proved they can be a stubborn defence to score past against Spain and are likely to play similar tactics against Portugal. The difference will be this time they have less motivation to keep their opponents out, and Portugal have Ronaldo who is proving he can win games on his own.
25 mins: Spain 1 Morocco 1: The Spanish defence go to sleep again, once more allowing Boutaib a free route to goal. This time De Gea comes to their rescue, standing up long enough to make a block at close quarters. It's the first save that the goalkeeper has made at these finals.
31 mins: Iran 0 Portugal 0: The elderly Portuguese physiotherapist has his big bag of ice out again, this time for Jose Fonte, who has also taken a whack to the head. We're informed temperatures are high in Saransk this evening so perhaps the players don't mind that they're getting roughed up if that's the treatment on the table.
33 mins: Iran 0 Portugal 0: Raphael Guerreiro goes into the book for a late sliding tackle on Jahanbakhsh as he charged down the right wing. It's a poor, poor challenge from the left-back but that doesn't stop him complaining about the decision. I guess that's what comes from playing alongside Pepe.
35 mins: Spain 1 Morocco 1: Meanwhile, the Moroccan players are in danger of losing their discipline in Kaliningrad. Four of their rank - Karim El Ahmadi, Nordin Amrabat, Manuel da Costa and Moubarak Boussoufa - have all been booked within a ten-minute spell of each other.
45 mins: GOAL! IRAN 0 PORTUGAL 1:
A stroke of genius from Ricardo Quaresma on the stroke of half-time! In his first ever World Cup game, the veteran Portuguese winger has come up with a trademark moment of brilliance to give his country the lead. Coming in off the right wing, Quaresma played a neat one-two with Adrien Silva, and, on receiving the back-heeled return pass, curled a wonderful shot into the far top corner with the outside of his right boot. Superb!
With that Quaresma goal just before the break, Portugal now lead Group B, two points clear of Spain. As it stands. a meeting with the host nation, Russia, awaits the European champions in the Last 16.
