Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Preparations for Egypt’s first World Cup finals match for 28 years have been overshadowed by the question of Mohamed Salah’s fitness.

The Liverpool superstar has been deemed fit to travel to Russia and yet it remains unclear how much of a factor his injured shoulder will allow him to be at the tournament.

Hector Cuper’s men have little margin for error at Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg. Uruguay are widely fancied as dark horses for World Cup 2018 and will be satisfied with nothing less than top spot in Group A.

Prediction

Egypt 0-2 Uruguay: Atletico Madrid pair Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez will keep Egypt at bay while Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani make the difference at the other end.

But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.

78 mins: Can either side find a breakthrough? If anything Uruguay look the more dangerous, and will remain so until the end with Cavani and Suarez on the field

82 mins: Two breaks from Egypt in a matter of minutes, and they are crying out for Mo Salah. A lack of good decision making has seen decent chances squandered.

Salah will remain on the bench for this one, as Amr Warda is replaced by Ramadan Sobhi in Egypt's final change of the afternoon.

83 mins: SAVE! Suarez and Cavani combine with the latter striking a beautiful volley at El Shenawy who pulls off the save of the tournament so far. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 14:43

87 mins: Free kick in a dangerous position for Uruguay, just outside the box. Meanwhile, Vecino is replaced by Torreira.

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 14:46

88 mins: POST! Cavani strikes a brilliant free kick, beats El Shenawy but the post denies him. Uruguay suddenly spark into life in the final moments...

90 mins: GOAL! Egypt 0-1 Uruguay

It's heartbreak for Egypt! Gimenez with a brilliant header from a corner, the keeper can do nothing and Uruguay go wild! Surely they have won this now?

95 mins: Hegazi picks up a yellow for a stamp on Suarez as Uruguay stumble to victory

FULL TIME: Egypt 0-1 Uruguay

A late, late goal from Jose Maria Gimenez breaks the heart of Egypt, who were without Mohamed Salah. Uruguay must improve if they are to reach the business end of the tournament
