Harry Kane had put England into the lead shortly after half-time from the penalty spot after the striker was fouled by defender Carlos Sanchez, with the captain brushing himself down to score his sixth goal of the tournament to remain top goalscorer.
But Colombia displayed their incredible resilience to score in the 93rd minute through a well-executed header through defender Yelly Mina, sending the game to extra-time with the scores locked at 1-1.
With no splitting the teams after 30 additional minutes, the game headed to penalties with England slipping behind when Jordan Henderson's effort was saved. However, Mateus Uribe rattled his effort off the crossbar before goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca, setting up Eric Dier to score the match-winning penalty and send England through to a quarter-final against Sweden. Here's how the action unfolded.

Odds:
Colombia: 3/1
England: 23/20
Draw after 90 minutes: 2/1
Prediction:
Colombia 1-1 England (England win on penalties). It’s pretty unlikely, because England don’t win shootouts, but Germany don’t go out at the group stage so who knows?
52 mins: Arias picks up a yellow card after an aerial clash with Harry Kane. Kane gets an elbow in his back, but also a free kick in a promising position 30 yards out to the left of goal
53 mins: Very, very good delivery. Maguire so close to getting on the end of that one, but Sanchez clears away. Good defending from Colombia
54 mins: PENALTY! Yellow card for Carlos Sanchez after a foul on Harry Kane!
55 mins: Colombian complaints continue, and they are around the spot where Harry Kane is ready to place to ball. This is a huge, huge moment for England's captain
Colombia trying everything in the book to prevent Harry Kane from scoring this penalty...
57 mins: GOAL! Colombia 0-1 England (Harry Kane pen)
He kept his head! In all of the drama and the complaints, Harry Kane kept his head and rolled his penalty down the middle of the goal. England lead. This is MASSIVE.
There was more controversy at half-time as Raheem Sterling made his way down the tunnel...
60 mins: Gareth Southgate beginning to lose his patience on the touchline as another foul goes against England. Colombia are preparing a change, as they look to find an equaliser. This is going to be the longest half an hour in history for England fans...
Well what complete farce that was.
Mark Geiger has lost control of this game and every decision now is sparking a wild sprint towards him by the offending team.
Pretty unclear from our vantage point how many yellow cards were given out in that ludicrous penalty situation but one thing was very clear, Harry Kane sending David Ospina to the ground and clipping the ball home. 1-0.
Ed Maylon from the Spartak Stadium - giving us a clear view of the chaos surrounding this game right now
63 mins: This is really, really unsightly for the young fans watching this game. Maguire goes down in the penalty area and gets up to tell the referee he wasn't touched. Colombian players surround the referee, and it looks as though Falcao picked up a yellow for his remonstrations
