England are through to the quarter-finals of World Cup 2018 after a nail-biting penalty shootout victory over Colombia.

Harry Kane had put England into the lead shortly after half-time from the penalty spot after the striker was fouled by defender Carlos Sanchez, with the captain brushing himself down to score his sixth goal of the tournament to remain top goalscorer.

But Colombia displayed their incredible resilience to score in the 93rd minute through a well-executed header through defender Yelly Mina, sending the game to extra-time with the scores locked at 1-1.

With no splitting the teams after 30 additional minutes, the game headed to penalties with England slipping behind when Jordan Henderson's effort was saved. However, Mateus Uribe rattled his effort off the crossbar before goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca, setting up Eric Dier to score the match-winning penalty and send England through to a quarter-final against Sweden. Here's how the action unfolded.

What time is it?

The game kicks off at 7pm BST in Moscow.

Where can I watch it?

The game will be shown live on ITV and the ITV Hub, with coverage starting from 6.15pm BST.

Odds:

Colombia: 3/1

England: 23/20

Draw after 90 minutes: 2/1

Prediction:

Colombia 1-1 England (England win on penalties). It’s pretty unlikely, because England don’t win shootouts, but Germany don’t go out at the group stage so who knows?

Fancy some post match reading after that incredible shootout? Here's our piece on five things we learnt

Molly Hudson3 July 2018 22:01

Eric Dier on the crucial spot kick:

"It's a nervous one I've never been in that situation before. I felt like I had to score after I missed the header at the end there."

Dier on resilience of the team:

Obviously to get knocked down at the end its difficult to come back from that but we were ready we knew what we had to do and we stuck to out plan and we did not panic. We were ready for penalties.

We may have eventually won the game, but less than pleasant scenes, particularly in the second half surrounding indiscipline and refereeing decisions plagued it

Kieran Trippier on conceding the goal, and keeping composed for the penalty shootout:

I thought we played really well in the first half a mistake by myself for their goal, I think I thought he was just going to head it directly in and I couldn't adjust my body. I was gutted but we carried on how we were playing and believed, the spirit in this team, we've got some great penalty takers in this team and we have practised and practised.

We've done that after every session and I couldn't be happier for Jordan Pickford. You have to pick a spot and put it their every time and that's what I did.

England manager Gareth Southgate on ITV:

"Fantastic. I think we deserved it as well. We played so well in the 90 minutes, We showed resilience to come back from huge disappointment and kept calm. It's huge credit to all our players and staff.

"Shootouts are tough. We had talked long and hard about owning the process of a shootout. They kept calm. The players have taken it all on board, it's a special moment for us.

"We looked at technique, how we needed to be as a team, the goalkeeper's role. A special moment but now I'm thinking about Sweden.

"This was special but I want us to go on. Sweden is another team we have a poor record against. We have underestimated them for years.

"We didn't rise to it which was brilliant, in general. A couple of times we lost our cool. It was an away game, to deal with it all was exceptional.

"They have created their own story and made history. I don't want to go home yet."
