Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

All eyes will be on Lionel Messi as the 30-year-old Argentina star bids to lift the trophy for what looks likely to be his final World Cup tournament.

Group D kicks off with a clash against Iceland in Moscow, who are starting the tournament pretty confident after knocking England out of the Euro 2016.

Argentina should tread lightly though - Iceland could end up being the underdogs in the so-called 'Group of Death' as their track record has proven after drawing with Portugal at its European Championships debut two years ago.

With Iceland also reaching this stage for the first time in their history, they will be putting up a good fight to keep that momentum going.

What time is kick-off?

Argentina vs Iceland kicks off at 2pm BST.

Where can I watch it?

The game will be shown on ITV.

Odds

Argentina: 1/3

Iceland: 9/1

Draw: 4/1

Prediction

Argentina 4-2 Iceland. Both squads will be keen to get out of their groups, but it will certainly be entertaining to watch Iceland's star player Gylfi Sigurdsson give the Argentines a tough time.

But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.

85 min: Five minutes to go - do we have a winner in this one?

87: SAVE! And what a save it is from the Icelandic no.1. Pavon sends in a testing cross which bends towards the far post without being touched and he gets important fingertips on it.

88 min: Finnbogason, the goalscorer, is replaced by Sigurdarson.

90 min: 5 MINUTES ADDED.

92 min: Messi creates a bit of space for himself in the box but I mean 'a bit' and his right footed strike never looked like testing Halldorsson.

Nathan Jacobs16 June 2018 15:52

93 min: Otamendi with a wasteful ball back into the box but it lands into the safely and gratefully into the hand of Halldorsson.

94 min: FREE-KICK TO ARGENTINA.

Can Messi replicate the heroics of his rival Cristiano Ronaldo who last night produced last-minute magic?

Nathan Jacobs16 June 2018 15:54

95 min: No, he can't.

95 min: AND IT'S FULL TIME!

Iceland have earned a well-fought, well-deserved point against Argentina who will need to improve if they want to win their first tournament for 25 years when they won the Copa America in 1993.

For Iceland, they'll be really hopeful this performance is a sign of things to come but they still have a tough group to navigate their way past.

If today's performance is anything to go by, it's all to play for in Group D - the group of death.

ARGENTINA 1-1 ICELAND.
