Haaland exceptional, deserves Player of Month - Pep

Jack Grealish scored inside the opening minute and produced a much improved performance as Manchester City thrashed 10-man Wolves at Molineux.

After being backed by his manager Pep Guardiola, Grealish answered his critics as he finished Kevin de Bruyne’s fine cross to give City the lead after just 55 seconds with his first goal of the season.

Erling Haaland added a second for City to score in a seventh straight game in a row, this time drilling a shot from outside of the box into the bottom corner.

It went from bad to worse for Wolves when Nathan Collins was shown a straight red card for a recklessly high challenge on Grealish.

Although Bruno Lage’s side responded well, Phil Foden made it three in the second half as De Bruyne got another assist. The result moves City top, ahead of Arsenal who visit Brentford tomorrow.

For Wolves, both Costa and Raul Jiminez are also unavailable, meaning that it’s Podence leading the line for the home side. Despite the injuries up top, Hwang Hee-chan, who was predicted to start, only makes the bench. For City, Aymeric Laporte is still not ready to play, which means Guardiola has opted for John Stones at right-back.

The top spot in the Premier League table is up for grabs for Man City today as they take on Wolves, who are currently in 15th, who have only won one match in the league so far this season. The home side have been quite unlucky as their new marquee signing, Sasa Kalajdzic, has suffered an ACL injury. He will be out for some significant time. In the meantime, Bruno Lage has turned to former Premier League winner Diego Costa to find some goals in his struggling side, though the manager has said he’ll still need time to get fit enough for the league. Pep Guardiola’s side, on the other hand, are flying high, as City currently have an unbeaten run in all competitions that now stands at eight games. It has been over a year since they have lost to Spurs away, winning 15 and drawing six since.

Jack Grealish: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola defends record signing’s form

Pep Guardiola has launched a defence of Jack Grealish, suggesting that it is his responsibility and that of the rest of his Manchester City squad to get the best out of the club’s record signing.

Grealish was substituted before the hour mark of Wednesday’s Champions League group stage win over Borussia Dortmund having struggled to make an impact and is yet to score in five appearances this season.

The 27-year-old has only six goals and four assists to his name since joining in a £100m move from Aston Villa last year, a transfer which made him the most expensive player in British football’s history.

Grealish has nevertheless been named in Gareth Southgate’s 28-man England squad for upcoming Nations League clashes against Italy and Germany, and is expected to be on the plane to Qatar in November for this winter’s World Cup.

Guardiola attributed Grealish’s form to an ankle injury which disrupted his start to the season but also defended his performance against Dortmund, and instead claimed his own team-mates had left him “isolated” by not taking up goal-scoring positions.
