Pep: 'Final final against Wolves massively, massively important'

Kevin De Bruyne scored four goals as Manchester City restored a three-point lead at the Premier League summit with a 5-1 win at Wolves.

The playmaker rattled in a left-footed hat-trick inside the opening 24 minutes and added another on the hour as City demonstrated the firepower they have even before Erling Haaland arrives next season.

City’s victory was also an emphatic response to title rivals Liverpool’s success over Aston Villa the previous night and tightened their grip on the title race with just two games to play.

The De Bruyne show was briefly interrupted by a Leander Dendoncker strike early on but a late Raheem Sterling tap-in ensured they would score five for a second successive game.

With the extra insurance of a goal difference now plus seven better than their Merseyside rivals, City are closing in on their fourth title in five seasons.

Kevin de Bruyne mimicked Erling Haaland in one of his three goal celebrations during that first half.

The Borussia Dortmund striker was confirmed as City’s newest superstar signing yesterday and will arrive in the summer.

All four goals from that first half for your viewing pleasure.

Half-time: So a Kevin de Bruyne hat-trick is the difference. The Belgian has scored three goals in 17 first half minutes to potentially put this game beyond Wolves.

Dendoncker did equalise for the hosts, but that did not stop De Bruyne from netting another two.

Mountain to climb for Wolves.

45+2 mins: Sterling looks for a penalty as he goes down in the area but that would have been incredibly soft.

Wolves then go up the other end with a quick break. Laporte gets across to clear Neto’s low ball into the box but it cannons back off the body/arm of Fernandinho and the home fans appeal for a spot kick of their own. Not given either.

And that’s all for the first half.

Wolves 1-3 Man City

45 mins: Two minutes of added time at the end of the first half. Wolves will want that half-time interval.

Wolves 1-3 Man City

44 mins: The last 10 minutes of this match have been a total procession for Manchester City. It feels like the final moments of the game rather than the final moments of the first half.

It’s been very easy for the champions since the third De Bruyne goal.

And he goes searching for a fourth. Fernandinho feeds Silva and he lays it off to De Bruyne who is 25 yards from goal but full of confident. He takes on the shot but this one drifts wide.

42 mins: Anyone got De Bruyne in their Fantasy teams? Anyone take him out this week? My brother has just messaged me absolutely raging.

The Belgian could end this game with any number of goals. As it is, he has three.

City playing out this first half at a canter.

Wolves 1-3 Man City

39 mins: Neves nicks the ball back for Wolves but his pass towards Neto gives the ball straight back to City. So frustrating for the home fans.

Gundogan picks out Sterling on the right flank. He then slides in Cancelo and the Portuguese full-back comes onto the ball at pace before rifling an effort over the bar..

Wolves 1-3 Man City

37 mins: Wolves have a minute or so of the ball before Foden comes clear with it for City. He dances past two Wolves players with a lovely change of direction but then opts to go back away from goal.

You get the feeling City are happy to take the sting out of this game until half-time. They are well in control and won’t want a second Wolves goal to whip up the crowd at the end of this first period.

Wolves 1-3 Man City

35 mins: Penalty shout for Wolves. Chiquinho finds space on the right side and charges into the box. He goes down after a Zinchenko tackle but Martin Atkinson only gives a corner.

It looked to me like Zinchenko took Chiquinho’s leg before he got a foot on the ball. The VAR does not agree with me though. We go on.
