Aston Villa had 71 per cent of possession during the final 15 minutes of the first half and they responded well to conceding an equaliser by offering more threat up front. Meanwhile, ex-Villa striker Ings managed just seven touches of the ball before the break, so West Ham must seek a way to bring him more into the game.

While Villa have had most of the ball, West Ham were more often a threat in the final third during a first half that was slow to stir into life. Watkins' header opened up both the scoring and the game, and the two teams traded shots just before the break. The best chances fell to the Hammers, whose need for the points is far greater, but having pulled themselves level from the penalty spot they still have 45 minutes left to find a winner.
