Data preview as West Ham host Man City in the third round of the EFL Cup

West Ham brought Manchester City’s Carabao Cup dominance to an end with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out win over the holders at the London Stadium on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals.

Pep Guardiola’s side had won each of the last four editions of the tournament but after they were held to a goalless draw by the Hammers in 90 minutes, the tie went to spot-kicks.

Phil Foden fired wide from 12 yards with City’s first effort and West Ham remained perfect to secure a memorable cup win which occurred five years to the day of the last time the champions had suffered an exit in this competition.

Lucas Moura helped ease some of the pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo with the only goal for last year’s runners-up Tottenham in a 1-0 win over Burnley.

The Brazilian headed home a cross from countryman Emerson Royal in the 68th minute to settle a low-quality affair at Turf Moor.

Nuno still had to contend with discontent from the travelling faithful, who had chanted “Nuno where’s the subs?” before the breakthrough occurred but Spurs held on for a much-needed victory to progress into the last eight.

A much-changed Liverpool survived a tricky first half to beat Preston 2-0 with Carabao Cup specialists Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi on target.

Jurgen Klopp changed his whole XI from the weekend thrashing of Manchester United and saw the Sky Bet Championship outfit go close on various occasions during the opening half at Deepdale.

It remained goalless though until Minamino flicked home just past the hour mark and Origi wrapped up the victory with six minutes left.

Leicester required penalties to get past Brighton after an entertaining 2-2 draw on an emotional night at the King Power Stadium.

The tie took place on the third anniversary of the helicopter crash at the ground which killed the club’s chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four others.

Harvey Barnes provided the perfect start after the Foxes had paid tribute to Srivaddhanaprabha with a minute’s silence before Adam Webster and Ademola Lookman traded goals during first-half stoppage-time.

Brighton forward Enock Mwepu ensured there was another twist in the clash with a second equaliser with 71 minutes on the clock but he later saw his spot-kick saved by Danny Ward in the shoot-out with Neal Maupay also firing over as Leicester triumphed 4-2 on penalties.

Brentford claimed a first ever victory at Stoke after Sergi Canos and Ivan Toney repaid the faith of their manager with goals in a 2-1 victory.

The duo were two of the three players who retained their starting berth from the defeat to Leicester and netted in the first half to put the Bees in control.

Former Brentford player Romaine Sawyers reduced the deficit after the break but Thomas Frank’s men held on to win and break their duck in Stoke, which put them into the last eight of the competition for the second year in a row.

Zouma wants to celebrate birthday with a win

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma turned 27 today and wants to celebrate his birthday with a victory over Manchester City. Zouma starts on the bench for the Hammers but may have a crucial role to play later in the game especially if his team are leading at the time. He said:

It’s a big day for the team. Hopefully we can go through and win the game, as that’s the most important thing.”

Gundogan ready for Hammers clash

Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says his side are ready for tonight’s fixture against West Ham and explained that City’s busy schedule can help the team keep up their winning momentum. Speaking ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup match, he said:

Yes, we are looking forward to it. It’s game by game, there’s not really much of a break between the games (but that is) kind of good as well.

“At the end of the day, we are competitors and want to play as much as possible. We’re going from competition to competition and now it’s onto the next one.”

League Cup history: West Ham vs Man City

West Ham have faced Manchester City just twice in the competition’s 62-year history.

This will be the third meeting between the teams with Man City having prevailed on each of the previous two occasions.

The first was in the third round in the 1984/85 season. The teams saw out a goalless draw at Maine Road before City triumphed 2-1 in a replay at the Boleyn Ground.

The second was the semi-final of the 2013/14 season, when Sam Allardyce’s Hammers were thrashed 9-0 on aggregate by Manuel Pellegrini’s City, who would go on to beat Sunderland 3-1 in the final.

Pep Guardiola not taking Carabao Cup progress for granted as Man City travel to West Ham

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not taking Carabao Cup progress for granted as the perennial champions prepare to travel to West Ham

The Etihad Stadium side have won the competition in six of the past eight seasons, including the last four editions in succession.

Tuesday marked five years to the day since they were last eliminated from the competition, but Guardiola is expecting that remarkable record to be put to the test by David Moyes’ Hammers on Wednesday night.

Team changes: West Ham vs Man City

Both managers make a bunch of changes to the starting line-ups yet still name fairly strong teams.

West Ham boss David Moyes replaces eight of the players that started against Tottenham at the weekend with only Ben Johnson, Aaron Cresswell and Thomas Soucek keeping their places.

Manchester City’s squad depth is well known and Pep Guardiola makes nine changes to his previous starting XI. Kyle Walker and Ilkay Gundogan keep their spots but their are returns for Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and academy graduate Cole Palmer.

Recent results - West Ham vs Man City

West Ham have won their last three fixtures including sweeping aside Genk 3-0 in the Europa League and two 1-0 wins over Tottenham and Everton in the Premier League. Left-back Aaron Cresswell is in fabulous form and could play a crucial role in tonight’s contest.

Man City are also on a three-match winning run since a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the league. City have since cruised past Burnley 2-0 before demolishing Club Brugge (5-1 in the Champions League) and Brighton (4-1 in the Prem).

Pep Guardiola’s side have won this competition four times in a row and although they are expected to make changes to the team they still pose a huge threat to the Hammers’ chances of progressing.

Pep to play academy stars

Pep Guardiola says some of Manchester City’s up-and-coming academy players are likely to play a part in tonight’s cup clash with West Ham. Six of City’s academy youngsters featured in their third round win over Wycombe and when asked whether any of them will play this evening Guardiola said:

Some of them but less than against Wycombe because in that moment we had injured players. We had different circumstances but yes, we will take a look in the next days.

“We play on Wednesday so we will see in training and after we will see what is the best decision. Some of them are going to play, yes.”

Moyes to make changes

West Ham boss, David Moyes, has hinted that he will be making changes for tonight’s League Cup fourth round fixture against Manchester City saying that he wants to ‘utilise the squad’ to go as far as they in this season’s cup competitions. He said:

We are trying to utilise our squad the best we can by keeping them as fresh as possible for the Premier League games whilst also wanting to progress as far as we can in all the cup competitions.

“Some of our players have had to play more regularly due to injuries but everyone who has come into the team has done a very good job and we will be requiring more of the same tonight.

“We want to be playing against the top teams and see how far we are progressing. We know there will be periods in games when the opposition will have some control but we want to demonstrate when the opportunity comes that we are also a much improved team.

“As a squad, we must continue to push forward and attempt to constantly improve in every area.”
