West Brom and Southampton played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their Championship play-offs semi-final tie.

Grady Diangana had the game’s best chance with a header from Tom Fellow’s tempting cross but the Baggies forward saw his effort saved smartly by Alex McCarthy.

Up the other end, Flynn Downes saw his effort saved by Alex Palmer after a well-worked move with Joe Aribo down the left side.

A cagey game afforded both sides few efforts on goal but both keepers remained alert to make smart saves after the break, McCarthy denying Diangana’s effort before Ross Stewart saw his deflected effort saved well by Palmer just moments later.

West Brom will now travel to the south coast to take on Southampton in the second leg at St Mary’s Stadium on Friday.

Out come the players

A rowdy Hawthorns crowd greets both sets of players as they come out onto the pitch.

Let’s hope it’s better than what we just witnessed at Carrow Road...

Saints with the better head-to-head record

West Brom have lost seven of their past eight meetings with Southampton in all competitions (W1), losing both meetings with the Saints in the regular Championship season this term.

The Baggies will be looking to improve upon that poor recent record against Southampton today.
