Newcastle a very good side - Ten Hag

Manchester United defeated Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final to win their first trophy in six years while ensuring the Magpies’ 68-year wait for a taste of domestic silverware continues.

A first half header from Casemiro opened the scoring before Marcus Rashford’s shot deflected off Sven Botman, beating stand-in Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius, to put Erik ten Hag’s side ahead at half time.

Newcastle had been the better team until Casemiro’s opener, with David de Gea producing an important stop to deny the excellent Allan Saint-Maximin, but Eddie Howe’s team could not find a response after the restart.

It means United lift their first piece of silverware since the Europa League in 2017 after Ten Hag steered the club to a trophy in his first season in charge. Newcastle were playing in their first cup final in 24 years, but a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United is the same result as their previous visit to Wembley in the 1999 FA Cup final.

“It has been an amazing period, first trophy of the season but we want more it is not enough for this club, we want more and we need more because our standards demand more.

“For me it was about winning trophies and finally we did it. I am satisfied but I want more. I want much more.”

Casemiro is Manchester United’s game-changing catalyst reminiscent of Cantona

Win five Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups, three La Ligas and a Copa America and a Carabao Cup may only feature on the second page of a CV. The medal could lie forgotten at the back of a drawer.

The man-of-the-match award for the final could go unmentioned. After all, Real Madrid won 15 finals in Casemiro’s time at the Bernabeu, usually with him anchoring the midfield. But Manchester United reached and won the first with him. Winning, after all, is what Casemiro does.

It felt entirely appropriate that Newcastle were beaten in a large part due to the Brazilian. The opening goal takes on a disproportionate importance in their games and Casemiro, rising to meet Luke Shaw’s free kick, attacking the cross, assumed the responsibility for scoring it.

In part, that is what he does: decide if a job needs doing, he will do it himself. The tackler-in-chief has given United added aerial ability in each box. Either he goes to the ball or it finds him. Whichever, Casemiro has the charisma few defensive midfielders possess.

Manchester United topple Newcastle in Carabao Cup final to win first trophy under Erik ten Hag

With a clenched fist that evoked his team’s fight here, Erik ten Hag raises the Carabao Cup, and perhaps raises a new era at Manchester United. The bright Dutch coach has ended the club’s six-year wait for a trophy with this 2-0 win, but what feels just as joyous for his squad and supporters is the signpost of progress it stands for.

Newcastle United’s own wait now goes to at least 55 years, the big return to Wembley ultimately another disappointing defeat to the club that denied them at key moments in the 1990s. Not that the Old Trafford support, who of course sang about Kevin Keegan, should perhaps be too gloating about that. This very run to the final makes it feel that Newcastle’s next trophy won’t be long coming, even if it never really felt like a goal was coming from Eddie Howe’s side here.

They had no answer to man-of-the-match Casemiro’s brilliant header or Marcus Rashford’s deflected strike. Newcastle couldn’t get past the revived David de Gea, who set a club record for clean sheets. His much-discussed opposite number Loris Karius didn’t have a bad game, and made one fine late save, but questions will be asked about how he conceded a crucial second goal.
