From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United are continuing to overhaul their squad and could be set to lose Paul Pogba to Real Madrid, who are looking to sell James Rodriguez to finance the deal.

Arsenal meanwhile continue to scrap with their limited transfer budget and are turning their interest to Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, but face competition from United and Paris Saint-Germain.

Neymar and Antoine Griezmann are currently out of favour at their clubs and both are likely to face disciplinary action after failing to turn up on the first day of training at PSG and Atletico Madrid respectively.

Although Matthijs de Ligt has agreed personal terms with Serie A champions Juventus – according to agent Mino Raiola – the Dutch centre-back returned to training with Ajax today, Tuttosport have reported.

The 19-year-old is expected to complete his move to Turin any day now.

Napoli might have just been given a big boost in their pursuit of James Rodriguez, as the Colombia international was left out of Real Madrid's pre-season training squad.

James spent the last two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, and Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti is apparently keen to reunite with the 27-year-old midfielder, whom he worked with at Real and 'FC Hollywood'.

Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen is set to spend next season on loan at Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf.

The United States international was signed by City in December, before being loaned back to MLS franchise Columbus Crew for the remainder of the season.

The 24-year-old has experience in Germany, where he played in the SC Freiburg reserve team between 2014 and 2016. Here are a few words from the keeper on his return to the country:

Jordan Ayew is close to joining Crystal Palace on a permanent deal, according to Sky Sports.

The 27-year-old forward was on loan with the Eagles from Swansea City last season, and the London club are hoping that the Ghana international will undergo a medical upon his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, after the Black Stars were eliminated last night.

Arsenal fans may see a familiar face back in north London soon, as it appears that former Gunner Edu is likely to return to the club as technical director.

Edu has been replaced as Brazil's general coordinator by Juninho, opening the door for the former Arsenal midfielder to join Unai Emery's set-up at the Emirates.

The 'Invincible' is expected to play a key part in Arsenal's signings and promoting youth players to the senior squad.

Atletico Madrid have decided against pursuing Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, according to Mundo Deportivo, with the La Liga club preferring a move for Ajax's Daley Blind.

After Lucas Hernandez's departure from the Spanish capital for Bayern Munich, Dutch defender Blind could fulfill the Frenchman's former role, given his ability to play left-back and centre-back.

Atleti captain Diego Godin has also left the club for Inter Milan, meaning a centre-back is one of Diego Simeone's transfer priorities.

Jay Rodriguez is a Burnley player once more, as the Clarets complete their £10m signing of the 29-year-old forward.

Rodriguez re-joins from Championship club West Bromwich Albion, with Burnley having triggered the former England international's release clause.

West Ham's hopes of signing Maxi Gomez are over after West Ham failed to agree a fee for the forward.

Celta Vigo gave West Ham a deadline of this afternoon to agree a deal worth up to £45m, but it appears that the Spanish club have run out of patience.

Gomez was set to join on a club record fee and could have been the club's highest paid player as Manuel Pellegrini tries to replace Marko Arnautovic, but the Hammers are now forced to return to the drawing board.

Daniel Sturridge's focus won't be on a move right now – not with his dog having been stolen in Los Angeles earlier today – but the former Liverpool striker has been linked with a transfer to Aston Villa this summer.

The 29-year-old free agent is a target of the newly promoted Premier League side, who yesterday secured Tyrone Mings on a permanent deal, having loaned the player from Bournemouth last season.
