From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Last week Real Madrid finally announced the signing of Eden Hazard for a fee that could come to exceed £150m. Elsewhere, Daniel James has agreed to his £18m move from Swansea to United.

The future of Matthijs de Ligt meanwhile remains uncertain, with the 19-year-old defender currently linked to a host of clubs eager to land his signature. And Liverpool continue to press for the signature of Lille winger Nicolas Pepe.

Arsenal are meanwhile set to push on with their first signing of the summer with a bid for Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser set to be lodged. A new centre-back is high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority list at United with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Leicester’s Harry Maguire both options. Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another on the Norwegian’s radar.

It won’t just be incomings at Old Trafford, however, with Paul Pogba a high-profile target for Real Madrid and Alexis Sanchez on his way out with Inter Milan and Juventus fighting it out for his signature – if he drops his wage demands. And Liverpool could be active too as they look to go one better after failing to win the Premier League title by just a single point.

Mateta attracting interest

Newcastle have made a bid between £17 - £22m for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to L’Equipe.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has enjoyed a fine first season in the Bundesliga, scoring 10 goals in 28 games for the German side.

However, Mainz are believed to be holding out for a fee closer to £35m.

The outlet has also claimed Southampton are interested in the youngster.

Liverpool have been handed an opportunity to sign Timo Werner with the news Bayern have shelved plans for now to sign the RB Leipzig star.

Bild believe Bayern want to sign the 23-year-old on a free in the summer of 2020.

And with the Reds linked with the Germany international in recent months, they could now step up their interest with a clearer path to his signature.

Serie A says no to Super League

Fifteen of Serie A's 20 clubs have voted against a proposal to create a semi-closed Champions League from 2024 onwards.

In a statement seen by Reuters, the clubs backed a resolution which said that qualification for UEFA club competitions such as the Champions League should be based exclusively on performances in domestic leagues, as happens at present.

Juventus were the only club to vote against the resolution while Inter Milan, AC Milan, AS Roma and Fiorentina all abstained.

The European Club Association (ECA), which represents the region's most powerful clubs, and UEFA have proposed creating a three-tier pan European league with promotion and relegation between divisions, according to league officials who have seen it.

The top tier would be the new version of the Champions League, but 24 of the 32 teams would keep their places for the following season, breaking the tradition that qualification is achieved through domestic competition.

The ECA, whose chairman Andrea Agnelli is Juventus president, says it wants to help clubs outside the biggest five leagues by giving them more regular European matches.

England's Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1 have already said they oppose the proposal. However, some clubs from outside Europe's biggest leagues, such as Ajax Amsterdam, Legia Warsaw and HJK Helsinki are in favour.

"Any semi-closed model will endanger the value of national competitions," the Serie A clubs said in the resolution.

"We also express our concerns about the economic and competitive impact on Serie A of this UEFA reform," they said.
