From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United appear ready to step up their transfer plans after expressing public interest in Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, as well as current Tottenham left-back Danny Rose.

United manager Jose Mourinho confirmed ahead of Tuesday’s Uefa Super Cup that if Bale does not feature against United, he will see that as a sign that the Wales international is not in Zinedine Zidane’s plans and he will therefore “fight” other managers to sign the 28-year-old.

The Independent understands that Bale is in line to play though, and as a result United are targeting England defender Rose as a Plan B option with a wing-back seen as the alternative option to the wide midfielder that Mourinho wants.

Meanwhile, both Liverpool and Chelsea are weighing up fresh offers for Southampton’s wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk after he handed in a transfer request on Monday, admitting that he was “insulted” by the way the club have treated him.

Finally, Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista could be on his way out of the club after Valencia confirmed they are in talks to sign the Brazilian.

Paris Saint-Germain are still in the race to sign Alexis Sanchez this summer and, despite knowing his first preference is Manchester City, feel they can test that position as well as the resolve ofArsenal by putting forward the type of financial package that proves too good to turn down.

The French club have already stunned football by prising Neymarfrom Barcelona in a world-record £200m deal and sources close to the situation say that only marks the start of what is over the next few years set to be the most ambitious spending spree seen in football.

PSG still want another striker and, while they are also still pursuing Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe, have not given up Sanchez.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has insisted that he is staying at the club this summer after confirming he rejected a move to Leicester City last month.

The Egyptian, who joined the Gunners in the January transfer window in 2016, made just the eight starts last season and didn’t play at all in the club’s final eight games of last season.

“I am staying at Arsenal this season,” he said after the Community Shield win. “I am 100 per cent focused and will give my best to the club day after day.”
