Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The January transfer window has shut and Premier League sides will have to make do with what they have until the summer beyond free agents.

Crystal Palace's late swoop for Michy Batshuayi on loan should provide intrigue with the Belgian flopping at Valencia and requiring a fresh start, and with the Eagles still to face Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham, he could still aid Chelsea this season.

Arsenal wrapped up the loan (with an option to buy) signing of Barcelona's Denis Suarez to give Unai Emery an alternative option, whilst Newcastle's club record £21 million move for Miguel Almiron should please Rafa Benitez after a turbulent few weeks.

Hamilton have announced the first Ladbrokes Premiership signing of deadline day in St Johnstone striker David McMillan on loan.

The 30-year-old former Dundalk forward has scored five goals in 23 games for Saints and arrives at Accies ahead of the anticipated appointment of Brian Rice as head coach.

The club's new director of football, Allan McGonigal, said: "We're delighted to add another striker to the squad - it's an area we've been looking to strengthen. David arrives with a proven goalscoring pedigree and we're hoping he can continue that here at Hamilton Accies."

To the south coast where Southampton are in the market for a striker.

Birmingham's Che Adams is the one they want, according to the Mirror, with an £8m offer imminent.

Adams has bagged 14 goals in the Championship this season.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a DONE DEAL!

Norwich City have signed Philip Heise from Dynamo Dresden on a deal until 2022.

The 27-year-old also spent time in his youth career at Fortuna Dusseldorf and Borussia Monchengladbach.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s the next step for me and my family," Heise said.

“I’ve seen the training ground which is very nice, and I’ve also seen the stadium which was amazing. It’s a dream for every German player to play somewhere like this.

“I am a left-back and I think I have a good left foot with free-kicks and crosses. I like to make quick passes and make good runs behind my teammates and help all the players from my left side.

“I love his [Daniel Farke’s] style of football because it’s not just long balls to the striker, you have to win the fight and they play using lots of space.”

Had absolutely no idea the Canaries were that big in Germany, but there you have it.

BBC Sport correspondent David Ornstein has just tweeted that Yannick Carrasco’s move from Dalian Yifang to Arsenal is OFF.

That’s what everybody else has been writing and tweeting for the past 24 hours, of course, but Ornstein has just written it, so memes at the ready!

NOTTINGHAM FOREST HAVE SIGNED PELE.

No, not that one! He’s 78 and retired in 1977.

Judilson Mamadu Tuncará Gomes, known as Pele, has signed a deal on loan until the end of the season, arriving from Ligue 1 strugglers Monaco.

Some Tottenham news!

No, they haven’t signed their first new player since 2006. Instead, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou is having a medical at Monaco.

Great news for Spurs, as N’Koudou is objectively one of the worst players ever to have appeared in the Premier League.

Some great news: Peter Crouch, who was born in January 1981, is having a medical at Burnley this morning!

His medical will check to see that he is free from arthritis, osteoporosis and that he is still steady on his feet and not struggling too much in this very cold weather.

It appears Burnley have agreed to take him in part exchange, with Sam Vokes heading the other way to Stoke.

Ed Malyon:

Plymouth Argyle will sign former Liverpool U-23 captain Lloyd Jones on loan today.

The Luton Town defender will return to his boyhood club, who he left as a teenager, in order to help Argyle fight the drop in League One.

Jones has played for both England and Wales at youth level.
